Sen. Mike Lee is endorsing Ben Sasse in the Nebraska SenateGOP primary contest, giving the president of Midland University the support of another high-profile conservative and tea party favorite in the tight Republican race.

“Nebraskans need Ben Sasse to represent their values, reformers in the Senate need his conservative vote, our country needs his voice,” Mr. Lee said in a statement. “Ben Sasse is a strong constitutional conservative who understands the proper role of government, has great respect for our democratic institutions, and will fight to ensure that the people’s voice is heard in Washington.”

Mr. Sasse, a former health official in the administration of George W. Bush, has won the backing of Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, and Rep. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, as well as the Senate Conservatives Fund, Club for Growth and Family Research Council.

Whoever wins the Republican primary race is expected to go on to win the general election and replace retiring GOPSen. Mike Johanns.

A recent Harper Polling survey showed Mr. Sasse is in a statistical tie with Shane Osborn, a former state treasurer - with Mr. Osburn winning 30 percent of the 565 likely Republican primary voters polled and Mr. Sasse securing 29 percent.

The poll, which had a margin of error of 4 percent, found that Sid Dinsdale, a bankers, received 13 percent and Bart McLeay received 4 percent.
Mr. Lee said that Mr. Sasse realizes that Republicans need to offer voters a clear conservative agenda.

“Ben understands that while we have to fight hard to stop the policies of President Obama and the Washington establishment, he also recognizes that we must run and win on the power of our positive ideas,” Mr. Lee said. “He knows that conservatives have solid solutions to meet the great difficulties our country faces.”

This race is looking increasingly tough for Osborn. :(

Lee should endorse Brannon!

Greg says Lee has the most Constitutional knowledge amongst everyone he has talked to. Coming from Brannon, that says a lot about Lee. The first time they met, Lee grilled Greg for 45 mins on the Constitution. However, with the civil suit scandal Greg had, I am not sure if any more endorsements are forthcoming.

This is a strange endorsement. Why put your neck on the line in a race that is so close, with two top candidates that seem to be about the same? Perhaps this is some kind of quid pro quo for Senate Conservatives Fund's endorsement of Lee in the past?

That's encouraging. Tea Party Express seems to have a libertarian streak. Hopefully their "Our Country Can Do Better PAC" gets involved.

They have a mixed record.

Here are some of the prior Tea Party splits where the TPE backed the wrong side leading to a split in the vote:

Nebraska 2012:
Don Stenberg (liberty candidate) - FreedomWorks, Senate Conservatives Fund, Club for Growth, Madison Project
Jon Bruning (establishment) - Tea Party Express, Citizens' United
Deb Fischer (establishment) - Sarah Palin

Missouri 2012:
John Brunner (liberty candidate) - FreedomWorks, Senate Conservatives Fund
Sarah Steelman - Tea Party Express, Sarah Palin, Mike Lee
Todd Akin (conservative, but less so than either of the above) - Tea Party Caucus

They also have backed a range of liberal candidates in the past, including Michael Grimm, Richard Hanna, Jaime Huerrera Beutler and Mary Bono Mack.

FreedomWorks are far more libertarian.

Is it possible we've totally misjudged Ben Sasse? I checked his website and his foreign policy section wasn't bad at all.

I've thought the same. Maybe we just have two pretty decent candidates in this race that are the frontrunners.

"Nebraska Republican Ben Sasse has built his Senate campaign on his opposition to Obamacare — but he once consulted for a firm that was working to implement it.

Sasse provided early “strategic advice” to former Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt’s health care consulting firm while the firm pitched itself to clients in early 2010 to help implement the Affordable Care Act. Sasse is listed, along with his photograph and biography, as a “senior advisor” under the heading “Leavitt Partners team” in PowerPoint presentations from April and May 2010 in which Leavitt’s firm sold its Obamacare expertise."

It still might be good to send a message about who is a good person to get endorsed by.

Like Palin endorsing anyone who is either female, minority or handsome. Whether the voters catch on to the pattern.

Or Rove's endorsement of Tillis. Take credit for Tillis going down in the polls because of Rove's endorsement.

I'm starting to have second thoughts about Osborn. Why is everyone besides FreedomWorks supporting Sasse? Lee is usually on our side. Is there something we're missing?

Ben Sasse is running commercials touting his Weekly standard (not National review) and Paul Ryan endorsement. Just that makes me not want to vote for him. Regardless, I should do my research before the primaries so I can vote for the best candidate irrespective of their endorsements.

The real question is do you think that Bill Kristol and friends have "misjudged" him?

Will the real Ben Sasse please stand up?
The Weekly Standard/Bill Kristol have an unhealthy infatuation with him as well.

I'm telling you, if you want to know what somebody's about, see who sticks by them. If Kristol is sticking by someone, they're a neocon.

There you go.

Who knows the real Sasse? Us mundanes reading websites are not in a position to know, and this guy has no voting record.

That's a good point. It's an interesting race. You've got Mike Lee and Bill Kristol vs. Mitch McConnell and Freedomworks.

I'm confused. I guess it's Osborn for me.j

You also got Socon & anti-amnesty Schafly endorsing Osborn.

Sasse is from Fremont where they banned renting to illegals.
