Michigan & New Hampshire in play for Ron Paul
Here’s a few quick observations about the Ron Paul for President campaign:

Not too long ago, I predicted that Ron Paul could win the Republican presidential primary in Michigan. Today I got some anecdotal evidence. A couple of people were circulating a Michigan Medical Marijuana petition. I signed the petition, and then asked them if they’d been following the presidential elections. When they said they were, I asked them if they ever heard of Ron Paul. Not only did they know about him, they said “Yeah, now that it’s only Hillary for the Democrats, we’re gonna cross over and vote Republican.
Now, not only is Michigan in play, but two different articles are claiming that Ron Paul could win in New Hampshire as well. The first one is regarding Ron Paul’s poll position in New Hampshire. The second one comes from Howard Fineman in Newsweek of all places.
Earlier today, I noticed Jacob “Bumper” Hornberger listed as a contributor to Ron Paul’s campaign. He’s a libertarian’s libertarian. He’s the guy who was vying for the LP nomination for president in 1996 or 2000 (sorry, can’t remember which) because Harry Browne wasn’t libertarian enough for him! As far as I can remember, he was pretty much diametrically opposed to Ron’s position on immigration. Still, if people like Bumper are coming on board, that means that the rest of the “No compromise with reality” crowd in the libertarian movement can’t be too far behind. I’m sure Bumper realizes that Ron Paul would bring us much closer to liberty than any other candidate running.
After last night’s Fox News debate, I made a little video demonstrating that you can’t vote more than once in the the Fox News debate poll. The video has been viewed almost 450 times already!
Speaking of polls, here’s one you can vote in. It’s asking “Who’s the most conservative candidate?” We can honestly vote for Ron Paul, since he wants to restore the Constituion. What could be more conservative than that? Ron Paul currently trails Mike Huckabee 45% to 27%. No, you can’t vote more than once in this one either.
With just over 4.5 hours to go, the campaign is still about $100k short of it’s $430k goal. Time to make your donation NOW! Even $5 or $10 could help make a difference.

i live in michigan. and my boyfriend and i were handing out slim jims in at a walmart and a few college girls said they'd be voting for paul, and a lady had ron paul 2008 painted on her truck.

just the other day some people were looking at my bumper sticker so my boyfriend quickly handed them a slim jim. they already knew about paul and said they were going to vote for him.

i live in a pretty rural area of michigan which goes to show that ron paul supporters really are EVERYWHERE.

The only top-tier democrat that is on the ballots is Hillary Clinton in Michigan. So it's either her or a republican. Plus our governor endorsed Hillary as well.

I've heard Ron Paul has polled as high as 12% here, and we still have plenty of time. I have an hour between classes Monday and Wednesday so I'm gonna hand out DVD's and Slim Jims at a local mall during that time.

It's definitely possible that he might win Michigan.

That was my Wife. She told me about the very enthusiastic kid at Walmart.
My truck is painted too.
The shopping center is a good place to hand out lit, everybody shops.

Just goes to show we need to hit the colleges hard! I don't think anyone (except Romney maybe) has a presence across Michigan and especially in the U.P.

You ARE our RP supporter at NMU!! There are a few others. Join the Nothern MI meetup group if you haven't already or just list the members to see who is in the UP and contact them! I researched getting an insert into the NMU paper and it would cost about $385, not including printing the inserts. I believe Lord Xar now has a double sided color insert we can just order.

Question is how many students read the paper?

Is Michigan open or closed state?

Michigan is open. But there has been a lot of talk lately about the possibility of the GOP opting for a convention instead of primaries in order to avoid a spoiler caused by Democrat crossover votes.

Link to that info?

I'll see what I can find. I have pdf files for the two sets of rules, one for primaries, and one for convention. And the deadline for changing to convention if they decide to is mid-November sometime. I can probably find a link to that date somewhere.

As to the talk about them actually doing that this year. It's just rumors so far. But the rumors are based on educated guesses. Personally, I think it's unlikely, but others seem to think it's likely. The basis for concern would be the following:
1) Given that the top dems, other than Hillary have taken their names off the ballot, so that Hillary is the virtual guranteed winner of all Democrat delegates for Michigan, Democrats will, therefore, have extra incentive this year to cross over and vote in the GOP primary.
2) There is a widespread perception, perhaps true, perhaps false, perhaps partially true, that McCain's win over Bush in 2000 was due to Democrat crossover, particularly from unions.
3) Ron Paul already stands to get a lot of votes from people who are not registered Republicans. The situation with the Democrat primary in Michigan this year will only make it more enticing for them to try to spoil it for the front runners by crossing over and voting for Paul, either hoping to mess up the GOP and extend their primary season while Hillary can worry about the general campaign, or because they like his anti-war stance. Either way, that's not the way Michigan GOP leadership would want their nominee to be decided.
