Michael McPadden - VA 5th Congressional District

Interesting; thats my district.

The top two Republicans at the moment are State Senator Robert Hurt and Laurence Verga.

I can't believe I overlooked this one. Epic is completely accurate. This district will almost surely go back into Republican hands in 2010. Supporting McPadden should be a top 5-6 priority.

unfortunately; McPadden if elected will lose it again in 2012

Nah.... this is a very conservative district, R+5. Virgil Goode (R) got 64% in 2004.

It'll go back to republicans and stay there.

I've been to college down there. Minus the communist area around Jefferson's university, it's conservative.

Epic; as someone who lives in the district; trust me......theres a high percentage of African Americans who wont vote in 2010 unless there is a black Candidate; but will vote in 2012; Goode lost because of that fact; albeit not all who voted for Obama voted for other offices.

The exact numbers are on the State Board of Elections websight I can pull them if you want.

FYI Epic: Goode was first elected as a Democrat

Sure... but the seat flipped cause the democrat won 50.1% of the vote (and I think Virgil Goode was taken by surprise...). It was basically Obama coattails. In 2012, Obama will not likely get his 53-54%. He may lose. And in 2012, popular democrat Mark Warner won't be on the ballot too. Yeah, the black vote will be there. But with only 50.1% in 2008, there's no margin for error. We're just not likely to see as good a democrat year in 2012 as it was in 2008.

we'll see Epic; theres alot of factors that will make it hard for a Republican to take and hold that seat; most prominent is name recognition; just about every republican in the race is the favorite of one or two counties and the district has more area than the state of New Jersey.

Charlottesville; Martinsville and Danville (The three Independent) cities in the District tend to lean very Liberal. The more conservative counties just dont have the population to counterbalance then liberal votes.

Virgil Goode was taken by suprise; but to loose by 12,000 votes in Charlottesville and ultimately make up all but 700 and change is damn good when the deck is stacked against you. Virgil was well liked and respected; but the Dems made this a key seat for a reason and theyre not likely to switch their mentality anytime soon; they have it and they'll spend the money to hold it.

Haven't learned about the guy too much yet.

The key is that Periellio voted in favor of the stimulus...albeit begrudgingly. I believe he said he was against it, but he was going to wait to see what everyone else thought....then voted Yay.

This is big fodder for the Repubs.

Well I got a warm fuzzy after seeing him on the Judges show....and his issues page looks on target.

from his site:

Taxes
I am not interested in going to Washington to debate the merits of raising or lowering taxes and using class warfare to accomplish my ends at the expense of my country. The income tax code that we presently suffer under is morally repugnant to me and needs to be replaced. Because of the phenomena of embedded taxes, our current tax system is the most regressive of tax systems, and truly hurts those at the lowest end of our economic system the most. Because of this I am a supporter of the "Fair Tax" and would encourage everyone to please educate themselves on this important issue

Boo!! on the support of the fair tax...

If you support decrease in federal government Mike....then you can't support the fair tax. Fair tax = status quo Mike.

It's not a deal breaker, but I think sometimes people that are in favor this haven't actually done the education on it they encourage others to do.

Dr. Paul has said in the past that the Fair Tax is a step up from what we have now, perhaps someone can get the Youtube... He went on to say that while he would love to get rid of the Income Tax, it is more politically possible to replace it with the Fair Tax.

True...

I can't say I would absolutely never support the fair tax over the current system, but I'd prefer nothing. For me the real issue is total spending, not one of tax reform.

Boortz's is the big sleeze promoting this thing and his book doesn't appear to be about reducing taxes or spending. It's about finding a different way to fund current spending. Which people should be very aware of before they jump on this bandwagon.

Here's what they expect to happen at Fair Tax.org Here ( http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_faq_answers#50 )

The most interesting thing about the people over at fairtax.org is that they declare it a "progressive tax", which means "from each according to its ability" which is hardly something conservative or libertarian.

Anyway...I look forward to more info on Mike.

Guys

Lets be realistic for a moment; maybe I over looked the information; but has McPadden ever been elected to any type of office?

Not that I'm aware of. I suggest you find a place where he will be speaking and go meet him. I got this email from another friend from our meetup.

Todd,

I thought of you today. I have researched McPadden and met him and his wife last night at a local eatery for about an hour. He is an extraordinary candidate. I am behind him all the way and will volunteer and contribute. (I already have.)

Come on board

Let's talk to the guy and get some information.

The fair tax can be reduced with the size of government - the surplus as government decreases goes back to the people, the states... and in time can pay off the debt... ALL OF IT!!! and then can itself be lowered lessing the tax burden...Now that is worth fight for. Finally returnin US to the honor of paying off our debt as it was from the begining.

It is also better because people actually get to see how much of their money is going to the government. Most people see that some of their check is withheld by their employer, but few realize how much it is. If people see a 20% tax on everything they buy, they will begin to fight for lower taxes.

VA-5 is my district also....the 2009 elections saw a heavily Republican turnout, it's definitely ripe for the winner of the GOP primary to take the seat.

I'll look more into this guy tomorrow...I'd be excited to have a good candidate to support, for once.

Todd; youd better find out and be able to answer that question and others like it...not tell me to go meet the guy; because you will be asked that question when you are campaigning.

Top 5 Questions I was asked while Campaigning for candidates in the General Assembly Election

#1: Has this person ever been elected
#2: What does he stand for
#3: Whats his opinion on ______
#4: What can he do for me
#5: Why should I vote for him

Malkus: Overall turnout was lower compared to 2008 and higher for the Republicans as compared to 2005.

The sticking point is this in 2006 Goode held the seat by a margin of 125,370 to 84,682. In Contrast Tom Perriello won the seat in 2008 with 158,812 votes. Thats 74,130 more votes that the Democrats picked up. Goode scored 158,083 votes a total gain of 32,713. In other words Democrats gained 2 votes to the Republican 1. Also note in 2006 there was an Independent Green on the Ballot; that was not the case in 2008.

The question is how do you expect to combat those numbers. If even a quarter of those new Democrats turn out for the midterms then whoever the Republican is is in trouble.
