Mel Watt's NC District 12 will be an open seat

A good liberty Democrat is hard to find. I don't think we should gamble our energy and funds on the district when we have a perfect candidate for U.S. Senate, Greg Brannon.

Running liberty Republicans against entrenched Democrat incumbents in 70% Democratic districts is a waste of resources. And vice versa. The higher percentage path to victory and efficiency is to run liberty Republicans when a Republican district seat is open, and to run liberty Democrats when a Democrat district seat is open. If NC liberty activists can't realize that, perhaps a new group should be recruited.

There is some merit to this argument, but the fact is that I know of no liberty person who is a registered Democrat in NC. None. Perhaps old timers like aclove might know more than me. All the activists I know are in the GOP or LP. How do we mobilize someone to run as a Dem so fast? Even if we get someone to re-register as Dem overnight, how credible would be that person to the people in the district to pull enough votes away in a Dem primary from an established Dem politician? The whole thing would be an exercise in futility. If we had more time maybe, but the special election will probably be this year and this is unworkable. A better option would be to run a liberty-friendly minority candidate.

P.S: Are you in NC yourself?

I'm NY. The idea is that an open seat primary gives us a BETTER chance against the two party machine, since far fewer people vote in them than in the election, and the incumbent isn't running. It doesn't eliminate the big party machine guys, but catches them in a much more vulnerable position, since the machine candidate is not as established as an incumbent. The Tea Party even showed that, if charged up enough, reformers could even oust many incumbents in the primary.

What the movement needs to learn to do is to farm candidates whose "motor is running," once an opening arises, and in the case of the LP, ask them to be ready to serve as "switch hitters" to run for a Democrat or GOP seat as they come up. Couple that with a "motor is running" liberty voting bloc in the state, that will be kept up to date on liberty issues and contenders, and you'll have the base of supporters needed to rally around a liberty campaign when the open race situation arises.
