I just learned this term "nickel ride" just now reading.
I can say I had an experience that was quite shitty once. I've been handcuffed multiple times and in a cop car, but the worst time was when I was arrested for forgetting to pay a busted headlight ticket so they issued a warrant. One day like 2 years later I got pulled over for speeding and they executed the warrant. I was handcuffed extremely tightly and put in the back of one of those patrol cars with tiny back seats where it's all made of plastic I guess so it's easy to clean. There isn't even enough room to sit straight forward. My knees had to be at 45 degree angle AND the cuffs chain is so short that I could barely adjust my arms. I have no idea why handcuffing was even necessary when it was clear what the warrant was for. They didn't "ride rough" or anything but it was like a 20 minute ride like that and it was rough on me without any crazy driving.
So my full weight is against my tightly cuffed wrists pushin against hard plastic and my knees are pressed against the hard plastic separation plate. The only way to really be comfortable was if I laid almost in fetal position. It is like being transported like an animal
I actually had much more comfortable times the few other times I was in a squad car.
