One week after winning a seat to Congress, Thomas Massie will go from working on his Lewis County farm to the middle of the showdown in the nation’s capitol over the nation’s debt and avoiding the “fiscal cliff.”
Massie will take the oath of office Nov. 13 to succeed U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis, who resigned July 31 citing family health issues. Massie takes office earlier than others who won in the general election because he also won the special election to fill Davis’ unexpired term that ends Dec. 31.
A constant stream of calls from congressional members and staff have kept Massie busy since his Tuesday victory to get him ready for his quick introduction into Congress. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R.Va., sent him eagle cuff links to wear for the occasion.
Soon after taking the oath, Massie will vote on how Congress should handle the fiscal cliff, which is the mandatory tax hikes and government spending cuts set for Jan. 2 and precipitated by Congress’ 2011 agreement to increase the debt ceiling.
