Stocks: Market Crash Looming

That was just all smoke and mirrors from the government. Job losses moving up not down like they pretend.

H, Thank you. I think the Ralphs cuts were bumped from the 7th to the 27th. Grocery store war going on again out there with Raley's cutting 150?

NY complaining that revenues are down. Same at 41 other States. They will be down further when the States get their budgets done and cut the jobs they are going to have to cut.

Iceland volcano could be the straw that breaks a bunch of economies if the wind blows wrong.

Airlines and cruise ships depend on those passengers. Those cruise ships leave weekly and need the passengers there on time. The Atlantic flight route goes right next to Ireland and England and if they are getting ash, which they are, it is a major flight problem.

SAS laying off 2,500 due to flights being grounded.

Picked this up over at TF animation on where the ash is moving.

One can see how this can become a major problem. England has to import many things. Fed EX could have a massive package build up if they have to cancel flights. Shipments of fresh produce and flowers by air might be impacted.

The Euro countries already have major debt problems and this might cause one or more to tip. Iceland already is in bad shape prior to this economic impact.

Very interesting read. Note towards the bottom on May 6th what they are saying.

So UK might be the first due to debt. A few days later we get the US Treasury April Tax receipts.

Less than a month away if they are right gang. I see the IMF loaned Iceland 160M Friday. If the volcano keeps spewing ash that might be a drop in the bucket. Crops are not going to grow well in ash for awhile.

City of Reno Sends Out Layoff Notices: 207.32 jobs eliminated

The City of Reno notified 101 full-time employees their jobs were eliminated in an effort to help balance the city's budget. The total number of eliminated positions stands at 207.32 (see below for explanation and a graph.)
The city faces a $5 million shortfall this fiscal year and $30 million shortfall next fiscal year due to falling property values.
Layoffs would only save $500,000 this fiscal year, but would save multiple millions of dollars next year.
Cuts impact every department and include people who have worked for the city a long time. "We have some employees who have put in for retirement and try and save some of the newer employees that came on the force. So, I think that's a pretty admirable thing," says Michelle Anderson.
The council is also looking to tap reserves and shift money into the general fund to minimize the layoffs.
"I think the employees that aren't given the notices have a tough challenge ahead with dealing with the guilt that their friend and co-worker is no longer here. We will get through this."

O.C. jobless rate jumps to 10.1%

Orange County's unemployment rate was in the double digits again in March, rising to 10.1% from a revised 9.8% in February, the California Employment Development Department reported today.
The increase in unemployment, however, was primarily due to more people coming into the job market, which usually happens as the economy turns around.

Government Bailing Out Government

By JED GRAHAM, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 04/16/2010 07:07 PM ET

The Goldman Sachs (GS) fraud charges Friday may provide timely support to Democrats trying to find the budgetary means for another shot of stimulus for state schools.
The most likely funding sources appear to be proposed tax hikes on hedge funds and large financial institutions. Sixty votes may still be hard to come by; but the SEC's accusation that Goldman committed subprime mortgage fraud will only make Wall Street a more tempting target.

H,

A few more homes headed towards foreclosure if they haven't planned right.

Taxing Wall Street who will find a way to pass the tax back on us. Yep. Musical chairs, with only a couple of chairs left.

Maybe i just haven't had enough coffee this morning, but could someone explain the logic of this statement?

"The increase in unemployment, however, was primarily due to more people coming into the job market, which usually happens as the economy turns around."

Does not compute and I have had my coffee. I will make a cup of tea and see what happens.

"Tolleson Union High School District laying off 207 workers." AZ. There likely go some more homes.

I think it is confusing double speak.

What I get from it is that, there were folks who stopped looking for jobs and hence weren't counted as "unemployed" in an "official" sense. Clearly they were still "unemployed" though. These people have now started looking for jobs again but can't find them so now they are actually "counted" as unemployed. Nothing has changed in the realworld, just how they count the numbers.

Whaddya think?

Sounds like a good explanation to me.

If they all started looking for jobs all at once it would do that.

Of course more people looking for the same, or less amount of jobs would make the numbers higher, makes sense.

Rising unemployment a sign the economy is doing better? thats where they lose me :D

Crops are not going to grow well in ash for awhile.

I read a story about what what happened the last time this volcano went off. It was before the communication era, and Iceland was essentially cut off from the world. The rest of the world didn't really know what was going on. The thing erupted for 18 months, then the crops died, the livestock starved, and after a year the people started starving to death.

Right you are. Few are taking this seriously. The ash cloud is spreading big time. There is now some activity on a sister volcano. If it blows get ready. They are saying it is costing up to 200M a day.

People are stranded right now and having to cancel vacations and flights and can't get home. If this continues for a long time there will be cooling and crops not growing in certain areas. This could kill the European cruise ships on not being able to get passengers to the weekly cruises.

England, Ireland in the fore front along with Iceland.

Here is how the pattern is spreading.,

YouTube - Eyjafjallajökull ash distribution

If this were to go on for a year or two years Europe has some major problems they can ill afford. You don't just tell a volcano to shut itself off. It does so when it is ready.

Oh wait, traveler's expressing their fury because the airlines won't put them up at a hotel due to a volcano eruption they have no control over. What fricken wimps.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wor...veler_fury_hundreds_still_stranded_in_ai.html

Do they not get the airlines and cruise lines will be luck to survive if this is not over quick? Total idiots.

Soccer matches are being impacted due to the ash and trying to get to the matches. Millions to be lost there with all that show up at the games.

Just saying fruit is rotting on the docks because it can't be flown out costing airlines big time.

Surely Al Gore will be sending GOD a bill for this carbon assault on the environment?

You made my Sunday morning. Had to laugh.

Other sites are talking about throwing Al in the volcano to appease the volcano. I think they did that back in Hawaii way back. I think they used a virgin though. A volcano would likely spit out Al.

Cloud covering UK this am. Saying it is reaching around to Newfoundland.

If it keeps spewing and drops the temperature how is Al going to explain that? This just brings out how little control we have over climate. They were talking about ways to lower the earth temp from space. What happens when several volcano's blow and drop the temp for a year or longer?

Al thinking he can mess with Mother Nature is a joke. Just my thoughts.

If this one blows it could be a year or more and a big temperature drop.

Economic impact likely would be huge. Don't think the winds couldn't whip it around on us. Look at the build up of shaking on the graphs.

not likely that the jet streams will reverse, but anything is possible.
the ash would have to travel as far south as the sahara to get pushed back in this direction.
