Please choose one term in each pair:

anarchism or minarchism

cultural left or cultural right

democratic government or non-democratic government

universalism or particularism

atheism or theism

deontology or consequentialism

Define "universalism". It's used by some philosophers as well as the Unitarian Universalist Church, and in very different ways.

I'll go first:

minarchism
cultural right
non-democratic government
particularism
atheism
consequentialism

Define "universalism". It's used by some philosophers as well as the Unitarian Universalist Church, and in very different ways.

I mean with respect to forms of social organization.

If you believe that there is one form of social organization which is best in all times/places, for all cultures, peoples, etc - you're a universalist.

If not, you're a particularist.

what is cultural left and cultural right?

It's a bit hard to define...

I would say that the left's basic value is equality/fairness, while the right's basic value is virtue.

Modern social values are of the left, traditional social values of the right.

Quick test: rank how much political correctness and the modern idea of "tolerance" bother you on a scale of 0 to 10.

If it's less than 10, you're on the left.

N.B. This has to do with your own personal tastes and preferences, it doesn't necessary have anything to do with public policy.

i just don't see an Edmund Burke SOCIAL TORY but less of a monarchist than he was
co~combined with a John Locke idiologue HIGH WHIG set of sensibilities... even so!
i'm going to play the game... as in why can't i be both pairs at once an' play the very
wise percentages, issue of the day by issue of the day? yes, a longish thread looms!
