WASHINGTON — West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin said he has left the Democratic Party to become an independent, after years of disagreements with party colleagues on issues including energy policy and government spending and outspoken criticism of partisanship.
Manchin has said he is retiring after this term, but the move to become an independent opens the door to a possible third-party run for governor in his home state, or even a re-entry into the Senate race.
“To stay true to myself and remain committed to put country before party, I have decided to register as an independent with no party affiliation and continue to fight for America’s sensible majority,” Manchin said in a statement, which didn’t address any possible political campaign.
The office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Manchin had announced last year that he wouldn’t run for another term in deep red West Virginia, ending Democrats’ hopes of hanging on to the seat and cutting into their chances of keeping control of the Senate, where they currently have a 51-49 majority. But talk has continued to circulate of a possible independent run for governor in his home state, or even a re-entry into the Senate race, where former Gov. Jim Justice, a Republican, is the runaway favorite.
