Man Drops Charging Brown Bear With 13 Bullets from AK-74

A .69 caliber musket is what he needed, one hit would bring the bear down.

Pretty much everyone carries a gun in Alaska when they are outdoors for just that reason.

And the AK-74 deals alot more damage to the human body then an AK-47.

If the round can fragment and tumble........... There is a contentious debate about the lethality of the 5.45 x 39 round.

Depends on the circumstances. If you are shooting at a malnutriotioned middle-eastern farmer then it is non-lethal. But if you are shooting at a big man or a bear it is like a cannon.

I carry a 12ga with hollow point slugs when we go camping in the mountains.

Only if it tumbles and fragments in human tissue. It's like the 5.56... in human flesh with the right twist rate and velocity, it can be very effective; however, in a large animal, it's not going to have the penetration and hydrostatic shock needed for a clean kill. For large game, it's about penetration and knock down power. This is why you can't use the 5.45X39 or 5.56 for deer or larger game... they lack the punch to deliver a clean kill.

If it were me, I would be carrying 12ga Brenneke slugs.

Placement matters alot more then what bullet is used, so a clean kill is possible with small calibers. But then again small bullets might expand but big bullets never shrink.
