Regarding lawn campaigning "on the cheap" here are some ideas where the use of Coroplast could definitely lead to some inexpensive and fun lawn signs (typically made with Coroplast). I called to ask if we have permission to use and was told by Ernest Hancock in AZ that the graphics were open source and have been used with the Ron Paul Revolution movement. In Denver, we found that we could get vinyl cheaper than Tyvek. You must make sure that whatever medium will hold the spray painted stencils. They use and offer a font called "Stencilia", however, you are not limited. Here are 2 websites for free fonts:

Check out to see if any local high schools, community colleges or universities have graphics departments. I was able to get a 6X3 vinyl banner custom made for $35 at a local high school. Check it out, see what you can find! Thanks for these do-it-yourself tips for those who don't have such a thing around.

I just ordered 3 of these 6' banners off eBay and am rounding up some volunteers to help hang them.

Big question: is it typically legal to hang signs on overpasses, how long should I leave them up (will they get stolen or taken down by police), should we move them once a week if possible, etc.

I'm paying $35 each, so I'd rather they not get stolen the first night.

Any tips?

Might want to check with DOT= Dept of transportation first. They probably will come up missing in a week or so. Police? DOT? anti RP people?

When we did Perot banners, we would hang our banners from overpasses on major thoroughfares during the the busiest times of the day. There was always at least three or four of us in attendance, two or three handling the banner and waving at the cars below with one or two handing out bumper stickers to those passerbys at the intersections of the overpass who wanted them. IMO, you need a minimum of two people to attend to a temporary banner display on an overpass.

And you don't just stand there, you should smile, wave and make eye contact with the motorists below. The horn honking is very gratifying.

There's always going to be the safety issue with the DOT or the cops. If they roll up and see you're being diligent in keeping everything safe they will most likely not bother you. It is best to act in good faith and make every effort to stay on their good side. If they get the slightest idea you may potentially cause an accident with your banner they will likely make you quit. We always put safety lines on our banners so there was no possible way the banner could drop into the traffic lanes below and we were never bothered once they saw we were being extra careful (this was on overpasses with just a railing and no six-eight foot chain link fence like on some overpasses).

It is unlikely an unattended banner on an overpass is going to remain there very long.

Working drive time in the afternoon on I-35 in downtown Austin was great exposure 'cause the traffic is just creeping along.

Good tips, guys. It's best to man the banner during rush hour, is what I'm hearing, then take it down unless I'm ready to risk losing it.

I went to a sign making party this past weekend. What I learned:

Stencils made from cardboard get soggy really fast. Best to use foam. We used styrofoam, and I was surprised that the paint didn't eat through it.

The paint on the Tyvek dried much faster than the paint on the Coroplast.

I love the idea guys but I contacted my local police department (Denham Springs, LA) and they weren't too keen on the idea. They called it "traffic obstruction." I guess for those who like living on the wild side, you could always do it until they noticed you and asked you to move along.

Apparently it's also against the law here to post signs on the telephone polls. All these rules are providing a challenge to get the word out. I guess I'm really going to have to get my creativity in gear.

It's now set up in my front yard for all my neighbors to see. The sign was good quality and they included a very sturdy wire holder.

Not bad for 5 bucks.

We bought a 150' roll of Tyvek from a craft store. It's 9feet wide X 150' long. This brings our cost for banners down to about $3.00 each.

(Banners are 3'WIDE X 9'LONG)

At this cost we can afford to LEAVE banners on overpasses and come back later to get them. If someone takes it down, no biggie...

Don't leave banners up to become trash! I would take them down after rush hour and put up again.

I can see getting a citation for parking on an overpass, but a citation for having a banner on your car?

Yeah, they often do...but I don't consider the signs I made campaign signs

Some of the ordinances around here have restrictions about having signs up only around a certain period of the campaign and such, but I don't know if anyone really cares.
