Loyola U. Prof: Neatly Organized Pantries Are Rooted in Racism, Sexism

https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2023...ganized-pantries-are-rooted-in-racism-sexism/

ALANA MASTRANGELO 17 Mar 2023

A Loyola University professor is claiming that organized pantries are rooted in “racist and sexist social structures,” and that the new so-called “pantry porn” trend, in which people show off their “neatly aligned glass spice jars tagged with printed white labels” and “wicker baskets filled with packages of pasta, crackers and snacks,” has become a status symbol for white women.

Associate professor Jenna Drenten wrote an op-ed for the website, the Conversation, in which she reacted to what she calls “pantry porn,” a phenomenon where “obsessively organized kitchens” have become “a new status symbol” on social media.

“I’ve noticed an uptick in glamorized, stylized and fully stocked pantries on TikTok and Instagram, giving rise to a content genre I dub ‘pantry porn,'” Drenten wrote.

“What lies beneath the surface of this anti-messiness, pro-niceness stance is a history of classist, racist and sexist social structures,” the professor added.

Drenten went on to say that “Influencers who produce pantry porn are predominantly white women who demonstrate what it looks like to maintain a ‘nice’ home by creating a new status symbol: the perfectly organized, fully stocked pantry.”

The professor also suggested that while minimalist concepts mean less is more, “the new minimalism means more is more, as long as the more is not messy.”

“Consumers don’t need less, they need more: more containers, more labels, more storage space,” she said.

Drenten also claimed that “pantry porn” sets “the aspirational standard for becoming an ideal mom, ideal wife and ideal woman.”

“Pantry porn, as a status symbol, relies on the promise of making daily domestic work easier. But if women are largely responsible for the work required to maintain the perfectly organized pantry, it’s critical to ask: easier for whom?” Drenten concluded.

The relevant paragraphs from her article:

Cleanliness has historically been used as a cultural gatekeeping mechanism to reinforce status distinctions based on a vague understanding of “niceness”: nice people, with nice yards, in nice houses, make for nice neighborhoods.

What lies beneath the surface of this anti-messiness, pro-niceness stance is a history of classist, racist and sexist social structures. In my research, influencers who produce pantry porn are predominantly white women who demonstrate what it looks like to maintain a “nice” home by creating a new status symbol: the perfectly organized, fully stocked pantry.

There's nothing "vague" about it.

As society deteriorates and devo continues, slovenly habits become more and more common.

But there is nothing vague about it:

NOT nice neighborhood:

It is true , I am blatantly sexist . I have a well stcked pantry and the lady of the house is in charge of it . I do my part once dinner is ready . No associate profs are needed here. They bring nothing to the table.

I agree with you, AF and this woman are equally fixated on race and obviously see literally everything in their lives as somehow derived from racial conflict.

Side note, this is an incredibly stupid take for another reason: like everything else on social media, it's mostly fake. You know what's the easiest way to keep a perfect pantry? Never use it. These women are probably the ones doing the least cooking, domestic work, etc., not the most.

There's a phenomenon of garage porn that's exactly the same, shiny stainless steel and unmarred painted floors and all that. None of those guys are swapping out a transmission in their garages.

We just kinda jam everything in the cabinets. Ain't nobody got time fo dat. Guess we are woke now.

Horseshit.

Pulling the fire alarm when the house is on fire is not a "fixation".

Do all of you see their pattern?

Anything with ORDER (one definition of order provided below):

"a condition in which each thing is properly disposed with reference to other things and to its purpose; methodical or harmonious arrangement:"

Or put another way, STRUCTURE: "anything composed of parts arranged together in some way; an organization."

...must be tore down.

From dictionary . com

From a Christian perspective, this may be demonic as these forces try to de-render order and structure for humans and watch the chaos unfold (like what is currently happening). This is a direct affront to God's structured word and laws...

From another perspective, this is trying to eradicate anything and everything within the existing super structure of society. This is what happens when we... let the inmates run the prison; the crazies run the asylum; the bullied nerds (I'm not condoning bullying) in positions of power as they seek revenge for their 4 years of torment in high school, the children teach the class, etc.

I think all of those are apt analogies for this upside downing of Western society we're seeing.

I'm sure China is a part (a part...) of it as they seek to supplant the U.S./West as lone hegemon and this may be part of their hidden warfare.

I have better things to do with my time professor.

He was searching for "panties" and it autocorrected to "pantries"

I'm inclined to agree with your side note - but even then, such observations apply at most only to those pantry or garage enthusiasts and their ilk who (disingenuously) promote and present themselves publicly as such, and not to those who quietly keep such enthusiasms privately to themselves (a distinction which I am sure would make no difference at all to the Loyola professor, assuming she could even be bothered to make it).

As for "AF and this woman": whatever you may think of AF, he has no political and/or institutional power with which to indulge his "fixat[ions]", and no significant prospects of gaining such power. That is not the case for "this woman" and far too many others like her.

Sneer and snark at stories such as this all you like, but as @RJB succinctly noted in another thread, there will be consequences - and the fixations of "this woman" et al. will be far more consequential than any that random Internet forum posters (such as AF, or you, or I) might dwell upon.
