Looking for AR tips

Yeah, it's amazing.

My dad used to be the representative for HK for Mexico, Pakistan, and Taiwan so I always go to play with all the cool toys he had. For over a decade he was the sole provider of light weapons and tactical gear to the Mexican military, which was awesome. He had an unlimited weapons permit which is completely unheard of here in Mexico for civilians, so we had "samples" of everything he would sell. Select fire MP5s, G36s, UMPs, body armor, tactical lasers, scopes, etc.

I envy you.

I envy you.

My dad still has a couple of things at his house. Unfortunately our relationship isn't that good so I don't get to play with them. But I remember he still has a couple MP5s and UMPs and even some Colt M16s from when the Mexican military was thinking of buying them.

Now thanks to you he will be receiving a knock on his door ooohhh in about ... (checks watch)

ARs are definitely not all created equal. I second the recommendation of Bravo Company (BCM) for complete rifles, upper halves, and/or parts. If you can get a Colt LE model such as the LE6920 or LE6940, those are also top-notch. Other highly regarded manufacturers are Noveske, LMT, Daniel Defense, and Larue. That last one is especially geared toward precision.

IMO, piston driven is trying to solve a non existent design problem. AR problems for the most part are due to inferior quality parts not made to design spec. Often, I'm able to fix DPMS, RRA, Bushmaster problems by replacing parts with mil surplus Colt or FN parts. Sometimes you get lucky and just have to replace the extractor, barrel replacement not so fun. By the time they are made into weapons suitable for war, enough cash has been put into it to buy a BCM or build a good one from quality parts.

I can (and have) taken any of mine off the rack and run 1000 rounds through it without cleaning. The rest of AR problems are caused by cheap ass Wolf or Tula ammo that is way under powered to drive the weapon - the shorter the barrel, the more likely you are to have a problem with under powered ammo.
Total agreement here on all points.

Intoxiklown, you're definitely doing the right thing by getting into the AR. Here's a great essay by a former Special Forces guy on the strengths of this weapon:

By the way, I cannot recommend Mountain Guerrilla's blog strongly enough! It's an absolute goldmine of information based on years of Special Forces experience. His new blog is here:
