Lindsey Graham’s collaboration with Democrats points to tea-party challenge

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham’s opposition to political ads targeting several Democratic senate incumbents could create a significant re-election issue for him in 2014.

When Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul launched an ad campaign against Democrats who opposed his proposal to end foreign aid to Libya, Egypt and Pakistan, Graham took the unusual step of defending the Democrats from a fellow Republican.

Graham held a conference call with West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin to slam both the ad and Paul’s foreign aid bill.

Paul swiftly fired back, telling Politico, “I don’t see myself campaigning against a Republican in a general election ever, that’s why I think it’s extraordinary that Graham is supporting a Democrat in a general election.”

“Which is more important,” he asked: “Defending … a failed policy of foreign aid or getting a Republican majority?”

The firestorm comes amid speculation that Graham could be a tea party target when he faces re-election two years from now.

In September, Club for Growth president Chris Chocola told a Christian Science Monitor breakfast that his group may have Graham in its sights.

Noting several high-profile conservative primary victories over established Republican incumbents, Chocola said, “If you are looking over the horizon of 2014, the sun may rise over South Carolina.”

Last year a Public Policy Polling survey found that 42 percent of South Carolina Republicans believed Graham was too liberal. Among the two-thirds of state GOP primary voters who consider themselves conservative, that number was 53 percent.

Only 38 percent of self-described conservatives agreed that Graham’s views were “just right,” compared to 45 percent of all South Carolina Republicans.

South Carolina state Sen. Tom Davis, who has emerged as a local tea party favorite, believes a primary challenge is inevitable.

“I like Lindsey Graham,” Davis told The Daily Caller News Foundation in an interview. “I think he is a good guy and has done some good things.”

“[But] I look at some of the things he has done and not only me, but some other conservatives, are scratching our heads.”

Graham teamed with Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain on comprehensive immigration reform legislation conservatives widely regarded as amnesty for illegal immigrants.

The senator’s fiercest critics nickname him “Grahamnesty.”

Graham also voted to confirm both of President Barack Obama’s nominees to the Supreme Court, Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.

It will be a pleasure watching this nincompoop fall from grace and a shot across the bow of the sinking neocon ship. Davis and DeMint will be great allies for Rand in not only the Senate but also in a key early primary state. We also better be ready to push Forsythe to the NH Senate seat as that is another special part of the chess board.

It is circular. He was going to be challenged in any event and he is trying to make more squishy friends. Champion of the Squishes! that's our Lindsay.

Tom Davis 2014!

Please can we have a Tom Davis subforum? he is an undoubted Defender of Liberty and has campaigned/endorsed Ron Paul numerous times, plus he's a state senator who has an increasing profile and would be a credible candidate to take down Graham in 2014

I suspect it is coming, although it would be Josh and Bryan's call. If people start posting Tom Davis threads, I suspect it might move things along....

One thing is for sure, Sen. Davis will need a lot of money and probably a 9-12 month campaign.

That means he will have to announce in the middle of next year.

He will have to do a lot of fundraising to overcome Graham's likely $5m lobbyist warchest.

Maybe with Ron Paul free from the shackles of the GOP he can help him with mailing lists and out of state fundraising efforts. There are plenty of conservatives across America that would love to dump Lindsey and would no doubt contribute.

The fact that he is supporting a Democrat in West Virginia should provide valuable ammunition in a primary campaign to get conservatives fired up.

I suspect for organizational reasons people aren't focusing on forums for 2014 candidates until after 2012 elections, only weeks away at this point.

I think Davis is going to be one of our big candidates for 2014, and unless there is something dark in his background policy wise of which I am not aware, I'd be really surprised if he didn't get a forum here.

True, we tend to get ahead of ourselves but taking down Graham in 2014 would be truly epic.

Loving how Rand is using the partisan Republican card against the establishments own. Rand just may be a master of political strategy. Hope he uses his talents to become the champion of liberty this country needs.

Dude I'm getting pumped! :D And your chessboard analogy is spot on.

That might be as big or bigger than getting Rand Paul elected from an obscure medical practice. It would be a HUGE feather in our cap for the liberty movement. I think the political shockwave of it would also put other candidates on notice not to be on the wrong side of liberty.

Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney battled for South Carolina...never underestimate your voters. Also, didn't Graham support the Amnesty bill a few years back, and still got re-elected in 2008 as well?
