Lindsey Graham Says Nominating Donald Trump or Ted Cruz Would Be ‘Death’ of the Party

WASHINGTON — Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina on Thursday unleashed some of the sharpest Republican criticism yet of the party’s top presidential contenders, Donald J. Trump and Senator Ted Cruz, saying either would mean “death” for the party’s chances in November.

“If you nominate Trump and Cruz, I think you get the same outcome,” he told reporters. “Whether it’s death by being shot or poisoning doesn’t really matter. I don’t think the outcome will be substantially different.”

Mr. Graham, who recently suspended his campaign for president and threw his support behind Jeb Bush, offered his unvarnished opinion the day after Bob Dole, the former Kansas senator and 1996 presidential nominee, said it would be “cataclysmic” for the party if Mr. Cruz were nominated.

The remarks by Mr. Dole, who is seen as one of the party’s elder statesmen, appeared to have released Mr. Graham to speak candidly about a campaign he called “beyond strange” on Thursday.

“Donald Trump, I think, is the most unprepared person I’ve ever met to be commander in chief,” Mr. Graham said, adding that Mr. Trump’s grasp of foreign policy “scares the hell out of me.”

Mr. Graham said he shares Mr. Dole’s concerns, explaining that he believed Mr. Cruz and Mr. Trump would make it easy for Hillary Clinton to win the election.

“Dishonest — which is Hillary Clinton in the eyes of the American people — beats crazy,” he said. “I think Donald Trump’s domestic and foreign policy is gibberish.”

Mr. Cruz, meanwhile, could prove too rigidly ideological to solve the nation’s problems, he said.

“If you take those two off the table, dishonest loses to normal, so let’s just pick somebody out of the phone book if we have to,” Mr. Graham said. “We can win this election unless we lose it.”

Asked about Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont on the other side of the ticket, Mr. Graham said he found his socialist leanings troubling.

“Bernie Sanders is a fine man, but he is by far the most liberal person to ever offer themselves as a candidate in a serious fashion for president of the United States,” he said.

He's right for once

Lindsey Graham is a Democrat anyway. He might as well go join his true Party right now.

If we nominate Trump, of course it will be the death of the party. If we nominate Cruz, I'm not buying it--things will be business as usual.

Graham is such an asshat. As if nominating another Bush is just what the party needs to thrive! Doesn't that dunderhead know that there are people in the party who say they won't vote for another Bush no matter what, just like the people who say they won't vote for Trump no matter what?

Cruz would likely be a disaster for the party in general. Trump will be great for the party, but bad for the Establishment. The best thing Lindsey Graham could do for the Republican Party is resign immediately.

Orrin Hatch and Dan Coats said pretty much the same thing about him today.

"I think we'll lose if he's our nominee," said Orrin Hatch, the most senior Republican in the Senate.

"There's a lot of people who don't feel he can appeal to people across the board," Hatch said. "For us to win, we have to appeal to the moderates and independents. We can't just act like that only one point of view is the only way to go. That's where Ted is going to have some trouble."

It's not just Jeb Bush supporters like Hatch who are speaking out more aggressively. A large number of GOP senators say Cruz's divisive tactics, which have included describing his colleagues as part of a corrupt "Washington cartel," will make it hard --- if not impossible --- to get behind him if he's the nominee.

"It would be a major challenge because of the wounds that are deep," said Indiana Sen. Dan Coats, who is neutral in the race so far.

"An awful lot of us really didn't like to be targeted as corrupt, establishment bought by the lobby establishment," Coats added. "It sure looks like someone was using it as a way to gain notoriety as the only true conservative in Washington."

Ms Graham is ignoring the fact that nominating progressive Republicans like McCain and Romney were GIANT failures. The GOP voters finally realized they got had and now they don't want to give in again and nominate another progressive neo-con.

Party of War is the Neo Cons. They were those kids that when losing at Risk would scream throwing dice then kick the board game over. Its time for them to shut up and go home.

I dislike both Trump and Cruz immensely, but I find it amazing how quickly everyone turned on Ted Cruz. He was everyone's darling just a few weeis ago.
