Liberty friendly Christmas gifts for kids?

The Giver by Lois Lowry is a good kids' book about the danger of conformity and collectivist "sameness."

Would these kids appreciate something like that? I'd hate for you to waste your money. It really depends on what interests the kids and how they are being raised. Are they raised on video games? TV? If so, then it's going to be pretty darn hard to find something they will actually check out. If you are giving the parents liberty stuff this makes me think that they aren't really awake either? It may make a better impression on the parents, if you give them the Liberty stuff and then get their kids just a normal toy. It would make you seem like a good person, thinking of a unique gift for them but then also getting something the kids would enjoy.

If I gave my spoiled, ungrateful cousins something like a silver dollar or a book about the Constitution, they would literally go "oh...this is stupid" and then go back and play with the other toys. Their parents are typical TV watching Americans and they raised their kids the same way. It's impossible to get through to them, so I stopped giving them gifts after this happened 2 years in a row.

Maybe this isn't what you wanted to hear, but I just figured I'd give you my perspective on things from my own experience with this.

My dad recently gave my nephew and niece a gold coin for them to keep as he thinks it will be worth a shit load of money in their future.

You say they're "mature"...How about air rifles (or .22's)? Good way to learn to love keeping and bearing arms. ;) I always liked shooting my air rifle when I was a youngin'. That and learning shotgun in boy scouts made me a big time gun fanboy. ETA: junior archery kits are awesome too. :)

Childhood friends of mine had a grandmother who did this... every year for Christmas and Birthdays, they got a gold coin. The girl sold hers all when she turned 18. One of the boys sold a few when gold hit $600/oz and is kicking himself for not keeping more. The youngest boy just turned 18 last year, and his dad told him he'd kill him if he sold it. lol. He has over $60k in gold! And all of it was purchased for under $350/oz.

A silver eagle would be a decent gift, especially if it's going to become a traditional gift.

"The Giver" is also a good suggestion. I wasn't particularly liberty-minded when it was given to me in 5th grade, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And bb guns (or even an airsoft gun) are a great idea if you think it'd be okay with the parents. I got one for a 9 year old girl 2 years ago, and all of her friends love using it--they set up soda cans as targets and will spend hours shooting, even in the snow.

BB gun would be awesome if parent approved. And if not, maybe a "wrist rocket" sling shot.

I am giving the Liberty Defined on audio CD & the DVD Minority Report & the DVD V For Vendetta to several adult couples in my extended family...

Any creative ideas for their respective kids? All between 5-10 years old...

Get them the book: Johnny Tremain http://www.amazon.com/Johnny-Tremain-Esther-Forbes/dp/0440442508

They also have a DVD and comic book, I purchased on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro..._nkw=Johnny+Tremain&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Also Liberty Kids are good too. http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Libertys-Ki...3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A5212&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Gifts? Why not love and affection? If you demonstrate a reward system for them, they will respect you more and understand free markets far better than just giving them something for a holiday, as if it were some form of an entitlement! LMAO!!!

One is apx 6, one is apx 10, both are mature for their age.

It might be pushing it but Batman The Dark Knight is very much about the evils of big government. It really converts Batman into a libertarian icon.

EDIT: First of all, whoever gave me the bad rep and left me a message about how bad an idea this was, to quote hook "Bad form! Bad form!" I think it'd have just been better to quote me and make a post saying that. Also, I guess I should point out that what I'm talking about here is the Frank Miller graphic novel and not the movie. That said, it is a violent piece of work.

My fave gifts when I was a kid was my uncle giving me a pencil case full of coins. I would sit on the bed and play Scrooge McDuck with them counting, sifting and jingling them. I also had some coin collection books where you put one of each year in the cutout slot. Got me interested in numistmatics, philately and the histories of both.

I'll mirror what a previous poster said since I was thinking the same thing. GUNS! Or gun lessons. It's good wholesome fun if nothing else.
