Ron Paul, the Texas Republican running for president who’s had surprising fundraising success, got a stick (or maybe a dust speck) in the eye Thursday as the Libertarian Party of Texas said Eugene J. Flynn, an immigration attorney, wants to challenge Paul for re-election to the U.S. House next year.

Paul intends to run simultaneously for re-election and for the GOP presidential nomination, as permitted by Texas law. Paul was the 1988 Libertarian Party nominee for president and generally hews to a libertarian platform."

No way! This will distance Paul from the Libertarian Party more, which is a great strategy! When people accuse him of being a Libertarian who just runs as a Republican, he can say, "Look, the Libertarian Party is running against me for congress!"

When I first saw this story, I thought for sure that it was a strategic move coordinated by the LP and/or RP's campaign.

Its crap like this that makes me want to withdraw my money from the LP. I have been a paying member since '96 but I cant support a political party that would rather have only candidates that meet 100% of their supposed self righteous standards then continue to support someone who is 85% of their platform.
I am certain of one thing. If this Libertarian candidate causes Ron his seat. I will withdraw from the party.

That's an interesting way to look at it. I'm inclined to think you are right.

As far as I know, the LP has never actually ran a candidate in RP's district while he's run for office (out of respect for him). Not sure what this is all about.

You guys shouldn't be pissed at the Libertarian Party. They've been helping all they can, and this helps.

They are in a delicate situation - they are trying to support Ron without everyone turning around and saying "Oooooooh Ron Paul is really a Libertarian, not a Republican!"

They gave us access to their voter database and passed the resolution welcoming Ron Paul back in if his Republican nomination fails.

That said, they still must distance themselves - and that's what this is about. Paul would never be beaten by a Libertarian in his own district, so there is no real threat. And if Paul happens to win the presidency, then hopefully this Libertarian will take his place. It all makes sense if you think about it.

Relax

If this is like past races (okay, I realize it's not in a LOT of ways), the LP has put forward a candidate when Dr. Paul has had Republican primary opposition just in case. When, after Dr. Paul secures the nomination (or when he's been unopposed), the LP candidate would drop out.

For the record (and I'm pretty sure about this), Dr. Paul never asked the LPer to drop out or pressured them in any way.

This is our insurance policy, just in case. It's a good thing (or should be).
