Libertarian Churches?

Any recommendations on churches that don't kowtow to the government? I think the Church is the antithesis of government so why do they all submit to government demands? I'd like to start going to church again but don't know of any that will stand against tyranny instead of caving into it.

Thanks!

The only churches that I've known to have large numbers of libertarians and liberty-minded people are Reformed churches.

Ah, I see the Reformed Christians are doing a bit of biased self promotion here, eh? ;)

My advice for any RPFer who is interested in this topic: Become an ordained minister! Seriously...you can do it for FREE, on the Internet, in about five minutes. You can be a legally-ordained, for-real member of the clergy, able to marry the living and bury the departed, start your own ministry, and even head your own congregation. We desperately need libertarian clergy, and state laws make it easy to get involved.

Internet clergy don't hold any power in any church, etc. What kind of church would consider someone who filled out a form on the internet a credible pastor? That's just silly...

I dunno. Used to be there weren't any fancy certifications for clergy as I understand it. Any ol' shmuck with time and interest could start up a church. (1st amendment and all)

Yeah, but who's going to follow you? If you're a priest or minister in an existing church, you will have actual influence.

Not unless you are qualified, please do not.

The Church is becoming more and more illegitimate all the time. We need true, Bible-based knowledgeable people in charge of ministries.

Before becoming a minister go to seminary school.

The young people and ex-military tend to be, but the old people are major neocons gay-marriage hating types.

Yeah, but who's going to follow you?

Why would I want anyone to follow me? I took some rather rough paths to get here.

Oh yeah, I was ordained once,, "Evangelical Free Baptist".
but I make no claims based on that.

I personally am Reformed. I go to a church which is Reformed in its theology (and where the preacher is liberty-minded). I would encourage you to find a church that is Reformed.

However, I would have to say that the churches which are traditionally most anti-statist are anabaptist churches - e.g. Mennonites and Amish.

Is that similar to "Freewill Baptist"?

Yes. By all means attend seminary school just like Jesus did......oh nevermind.

There is only one Church.
There is no following the Bible without the Church.
The Church is not the guy who changes your oil or your tax preparation service.
You don't get options.

If you want a Jesus-themed social club, shop around.
If you're in search of the truth, you may want to reprioritize.
God might bring you to libertarianism, but libertarianism isn't going to bring you to God.

Why, so the gatekeepers can maintain exclusive, institutional control over all religious discourse here? Look what the institutional guys have already done to muck up Christianity, from a bold and active quest for knowledge to a self-satisfied social clique more concerned with maintaining the status quo than engaging in prayerful and intellectual curiosity.

Religion, like anything else, works so much better under a free market.
