Ezra Taft Benson stated it Right

We need not mistake the prophetic words that have been quoted by prophets, such as President Ezra Taft Benson in 1986 stated:
In closing that prophetic talk Benson states:
I’ve attached the full talk in RTF format for those who want to read the four things we must do in order to qualify to join other citizens in the nation who “love and cherish freedom” in saving and preserving liberty---all of which will require God’s help, and which we will not qualify unless we be found “doing” and preparing as instructed by this prophet, seer, and revelator---at least for those professing to be LDS. As Benson notes, the Constitution will be saved, at least that is his expressed faith, and it will be by some LDS, the true Liberty lovers, (Ron Paul Supporters) as well as other citizens in the land who "cherish" freedom---many, many non LDS.
Ron Paul stands in the category of those in the nation who “love and cherish freedom” none of the rest of constitution destroying presidential candidates qualify. They are the traitors who represent the long string for 200 years that have torn away at every major clause of that document until today we face a ‘crisis of great dimensions.’
Benson didn’t quote a “white horse prophecy” but what he did quote, and doing so as Prophet, Seer, and Revelator has full and ample weight behind it in my faith (being LDS) to take it as certain.

He then states 4 things we must do if we desire to be numbered among those who will help bear the Constitution away from the verge of destruction. All of the preemptive war, pro torture LDS professing Republicans will not be numbered in that group, as they haven’t the faintest clue of what the US Constitution is all about, and the shackles it puts upon government. May it be so, and may God give us the faith and the courage exhibited by those patriots who pledged their lives and fortunes that we might be free, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.”

There also seemed to be a lot of question regarding whether the prophecy is just pure folklore or not, but it is very real. I quoted the exact wording that has been preserved. The "hanging by a thread" quote was repeated by several individuals but no exact account has been preserved with that wording. I believe Joseph Smith articulated this prophecy on several occasions with variations.
Orson Hyde, interestingly enough, recounted the prophecy but he emphasized that IF the Constitution would be saved it by be with the aid of the saints. He didn't recall that it was a surefire thing...

KSL really needs to be called to task on this horrible article. That prophecy is one of the most documented and reinforced statements in modern LDS belief.
At best, this is just a case of some well-meaning but uninformed KSL person thinking that they were towing the Church PR line I suppose, and not even considering that Romney could actually be wrong to not believe in the prophecy.
It was quoted, word for word in this talk by President Benson to BYU (as President of the Church) and the footnote for the reference is included in the page on the official church web site.
