SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine — As Russian armed forces effectively seized control of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula on Saturday, the Russian Parliament granted President Vladimir V. Putin the authority he sought to use military force in response to the deepening instability in Ukraine.

The authorization cited a threat to the lives of Russian citizens and soldiers stationed in Crimea and other parts of Ukraine, and provided a blunt answer to President Obama, who on Friday pointedly warned Russia to respect Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty.

Even before Mr. Putin’s statement in Moscow, scores of heavily armed soldiers had tightened their grip on the Crimean capital, Simferopol, surrounding government buildings, shuttering the airport, and blocking streets, where they deployed early Friday.

Authorization of use of force? Unilateral action? Where would the Russians get the idea that this is acceptable?

"After the horse has left the barn"- forces were already in Crimea before the approval vote.

Crimea was "given" to Ukraine by Kruchev in 1954.

I knew Russia wouldn't be bystander for long. It's officially on now. Long Gold.

So far, they seem only militarily interested in Crimea which is where their Black Sea naval base is located.

Other version is that those troops are Ukrainian forces that declared loyalty to governor of autonomous area of Crimea. Also Khruschev "gave" Crimea to Ukraine when they were part of same USSR. Statist in me: The moment USSR collapsed Crimea peninsula should have been returned to Russia.
Libertarian in me: There should be no states moron.

I would say that there is no way in Hell that Russia will allow anyone to mess with her control of Black Sea by losing control of Crimean peninsula... but then again I said that there is no way that they would make sequel to Blade Runner..... FUCKING ASSHOLES.... they will ruin cult movie that I really liked...not to mention that they will fucking rape Indiana Jones again...ffs... How low can mankind go?

So far. Before things are said and done, Russia will take over the entire country. Take it to the bank.

And the difference between this and what the US does is that the people being occupied are welcoming this. By the end of this "invasion" the troops will likely not kill any body in the territory they are defending and they will go back to their country when the treat is over.

This is not an invasion but an invitation by the vast majority of the people in an area after the central government have shown no respect for agreements of power sharing with the Real president and regard for the ethnic Russians in the country by trying to remove Russian as a second official language.

They didn't just try to strip Russian of it's status as a second official language, they actually did it. On 23 February 2014, the law on regional languages was abolished, making Ukrainian the sole state language at all levels. The bill repealing the law was voted by 232 deputies out of 450.

They always use the same propaganda around US invasions too. They will welcome you with open arms and throw celebrations in your honor. And in Iraq, that actually happened. I'm not sure that justifies it or makes it different in any way that Russia has propaganda too.

Bloody authoritarians trying to control the ethnic make up of their country by picking one 'official' language...

Is there any compelling reason that Ukraine needs to remain intact as a single nation in its current borders?

No. And these young ladies don't want it to:

Yes.

Russian pipelines enter in the East, but exit in the West.

And for this reason, Putin won't concede the West to the US/EU.

Get ready to rumble.
