Kerry Bentivolio loses primary

He was one of the best 10 or so in congress as far as voting record goes. It is bad that he lost, and the media is gloating, and treating it as a trouncing of the Liberty and Tea Party movements. Yes, he may have brought it on himself, and no, he did not vote as well as we hoped he would. But this is nothing to celebrate.

Bentivolio wasn't a top-10 liberty Rep. He's closer to 20th place or so. Not that that isn't significant but lets not over-praise him.

It's a shame he lost. His record was fine. Now we have Trott who is horrible.

Pretty much this. The overall voting of congress moved in the wrong direction with his loss and people are gloating. Amash did extremely poorly for a incumbent congressmen as well. By the vast majority libertarianism is being rejected hard this election cycle and stupid ass libertarians are cheering because generally their own people are getting defeated.

It mostly has to do with money. Untold amounts of money are being waged in these races.

Yup, when our imperfect allies lose, we say "that'll teach 'em!"
Amash should have won by a much larger margin, granted Ellis spent lots of money, but below 60% is sad.

Yeah, the only race I have heard reported on a mainstream radio news clip was about "rebel" Bentivolio losing to a Chamber of Commerce, establishment candidate.

The reality is Kerry never earned the seat nor was well liked by the constituency. He was an accidental congressman and an easy target.

He deserved to lose as a reminder for the rest of the "liberty people" to show them that we don't forget their votes. Kerry even had a sub-forum on this very forum along with Amash and Massie, he was removed because of his votes. Those of you who are upset simply because he was "better than other congressmen" should have maxed out your donations to him instead of putting it on the rest of us.

We need principled politicians not more part-time liberty politicians.

Precisely. And people clamoring Amash's win as a victory for Tea-Party types seem to ignore the giant sea of losses that came before it and will most definitely come after it. Every vote Ellis got is a person fed up or who didn't like Amash, for whatever their individual reasons. Amash carries a liberty torch, yes, but he also still represents Michigan. If a large majority of people agreed with Amash's votes, he certainly should have gotten more votes. But then, people like to claim that grassroots money is preferable to larger amounts from other sources. There's principle and then there's just realizing that others have way more money than you.

I see the typical problem around here rears it's head again. Some of you are so impossibly nitpicky, you celebrate the defeat of a guy who shared most of your positions. Oh well.

Couldn't have said it better! This is sad news. Anyone know the names of the other 2 tea party incumbents that lost in their primary to an establishment candidate?

I remember he pissed off a lot of people early on with questionable votes. I guess they remembered, too.

Yes, I wasn't too happy with his vote for Boehner as House speaker.....never sent him a penny after that.

Kerry lost because he was weak politically and had poor fundraising. Enough voters worried he would lose the seat against a white Democrat and well funded.

Not because of whether he said he liked someone more than Ron Paul.
Amash is younger and can fundraise.

If Kerry can be beaten so can Dave Trott. Hopefully the libertarian spoils.

The only thing he really had was immigration and his opponent didn't have a position on immigration until Cantor lost. Trott foreclosed on the immigration reform wing of the GOP when it was profitable.

February 04, 2013
Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-Mich.) sent out a fundraising email ripping the plan on Monday afternoon, using strong language to bash it — and politicians in both parties for supporting it.

Trott is deceptive. Ive followed this for a while and Trott has said nothing on immigration until Cantor lost.

Dave will not support amnesty and will not allow illegal immigrants to have legal status.

There Yah Go... tons of Fascist/Establishment money, eliminating representation of the people and keeping the elitists in power. Attorney Dave Trott is garbage, he was backed by all the evil from Washington DC that good people are fighting.

His email (about the loss) to people that donated to him since his first run was worded pretty nicely like a politician that supports the liberty movement. He just didn't seem very bright. Right after he arrived he pulled some real boneheaded moves. It's hard to give money to people like that. They just don't seem competent. Like others said, it was a fluke that he won in the first place.

Thank you for helping me the last two years serve our community, both in Michigan and in Washington. Your work to protect our freedoms is an invaluable service to our country.

Thank you.

Over the last two years I have run my campaign, and my congressional office, under one notion: the job of Congress is protect our rights, not take them away.

Today, and over the last few months, we have seen the leaders of the Republican Party of Michigan embrace money over ideas and cronyism over principles. They are more interested in protecting their jobs than our freedom. They have become more interested in power than helping others maintain our liberty.

I know that we are all disappointed with the outcome—and I assure you, I am too. But, we must remember that this is only the beginning battle to take back our country and take back our party from crony capitalists.

Two years ago I found myself in the unlikeliest of positions and I have done my best to serve the people of Michigan’s 11th District rather than the moneyed interests. I’ve also learned a lot from my time in Congress. The status quo in the Republican Party is going to have to change whether they like it or not. They will no longer be allowed to have our vote simply because we dislike the Democrats more.

I’ve seen behind the curtain and I know that the ideas of Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are winning. I can attest that my friends like Trey Gowdy, Mark Meadows, and the other conservative members of the House are slowly, but surely, gaining control. Principled conservative leadership can change minds and gain support. The revolution in the Republican Party is going to continue, and it’s not going to be based on hating the other guys worse. It’s going to be founded on loving the country more.

Stay involved. Stay tuned.

Thank you and God Bless,

Kerry Bentivolio
Your Conservative Congressman

The average Republican voter is not tuned into what's going on. They take in all the residual noise from the local media echo chamber, whether it be radio or TV ads. So all these ads make a huge difference when an upstart is trying to claw out of anonymity.
