Dave Trott topples Bentivolio in Michigan race

By NICHOLAS P. FANDOS | 8/5/14 9:47 PM EDT

Attorney Dave Trott easily beat out Rep. Kerry Bentivolio for the GOP nomination in Michigan’s 11th District on Tuesday, potentially reclaiming a House seat for the party’s establishment wing and making the tea party-aligned Bentivolio the third House incumbent to be defeated in a primary this year.

Trott received 66 percent of the vote to Bentivolio’s 34 percent, according to The Associated Press, with 60 percent of precincts in the right-leaning suburban district reporting. The 53-year-old Trott, who emerges from the primary the frontrunner, will face the winner of the still-unresolved Democratic primary in November. Mitt Romney won the district by five points in 2012.

Trott’s victory is a boon for the Michigan Republican establishment, which had targeted Bentivolio since he unexpectedly won the seat in 2012 following the resignation of GOP incumbent Thaddeus McCotter over a petition fraud scandal. Many in the party still see Bentivolio, a 62-year-old Army veteran and Santa Claus impersonator, as an “accidental congressman,” prone to embarrassing headlines and an unreliable voting record.

As party support lined up behind Trott, Bentivolio was left largely unprotected, a development made worse by a series of missteps within his campaign. Though the incumbent retained the support of tea-party and socially-conservative groups, his campaign struggled to raise money and was ultimately unable to afford TV advertising.

Bummer. He did it to himself. :o Just goes to show that trying to kiss a little bit of Boehner's butt doesn't work. They want your soul.

I remember he pissed off a lot of people early on with questionable votes. I guess they remembered, too.

It is probably best that he is gone. Although his overall voting record was decent, he is not the guy we want representing the liberty movement.

no... he didn't really "earn" his seat... he was only there because of a fluke and not from his own merits. He would not have been able to win his seat the first time if he had to compete. Might be harsh, but it is reality. :(That's sad because it would have been better if he had staying power because he would be a good ally most of the time.

He deserved to lose. If he would have just followed Amash, the liberty grassroots would have came out in full force to support his re-election. Instead, he tried to 'play the game' and got what was coming to him. He is paying the price for being an egotistical buffoon.

I wonder what percentage of House members serve just one term? Any congressional statisticians here?

Alright moving on. We still have Amash on the other side of the state. Hopefully Trott isn't a total dick.

He can help redeem himself by turning down/donating his lucritive pension.

Not really. IIRC Bentivolio got into office using the liberty movement as his launchpad and promptly forgot about it afterwards. This is the organic correction of an error from two years ago.
He was one of the best 10 or so in congress as far as voting record goes. It is bad that he lost, and the media is gloating, and treating it as a trouncing of the Liberty and Tea Party movements. Yes, he may have brought it on himself, and no, he did not vote as well as we hoped he would. But this is nothing to celebrate.

Why he didn't shadow Amash like a lost puppy is bizarre and was his downfall.
