Here's the statement from Justin on facebook
"In Michigan's Eighth Congressional District, state Rep. Tom McMillin has my full support in a run for Congress. He's a constitutional conservative who will cut spending, defend civil liberties, and represent ordinary Americans, not corporate special interests.

It would be a nice way to poke the establishment in the eyes by replacing Mike Rogers's old seat with an Amash style libertarian.
 
Is he polling well? Just asking based on this article from a little over a week ago.

McMillin was one of Amash's best allies while they served together in the state house. If McMillin made it to Congress that would be a massive blow to the establishment and big government.

McMillin isn't perfect but he has vigorously fought unchecked drone use and common core (despite party pressure).

No polling here but suspect McMillin could win with enough resources. The district is marginally GOP by a couple points but Democrats totally caught off guard and have no one with name recognition to run for the seat in what should be a wave GOP year.

I hate the petition requirements that Michigan and a few other states have. It's a huge drain on time and resources. Instread of going door-to-do, candidates are instead hiring firms that collect signatures for them.

I hope McMillin knows what he's doing. The last time a liberty candidate switched races was Randy Bragdon (R-OK), and we know how that's going.

Justin Amash just retweeted my tweet above, so I'm assuming he's putting some effort and resources into electing Tom. That is pretty strong for a congressional seat with a nationally popular backer.
 


There's a Detroit News editorial discussing the police state. It mentions Tom's legislation to reign in use of the Hailstorm system.

The potential overreach by law officers needs to be reined in through legislative controls. State Rep. Tom McMillin, R-Rochester Hills, has legislation he plans to introduce soon. One of the bills would authorize more oversight of CLEMIS and other such systems.

And then there is also the highly secretive “Hailstorm” machine. Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is one of about two dozen forces nationwide — and the only one in Michigan — with the $170,000 apparatus. Little is known about Hailstorm and national experts can only speculate about its capabilities. The technology is believed to be an upgrade of Stingray, a suitcase-sized device that is installed in cars and used to trick nearby phones into connecting with it and providing data to police.

The technology can track fugitives and find missing children, but it can also collect data from smartphone users.

Oakland County has been evasive in providing information about this machine’s capabilities. A second bill being proposed by McMillin would require law enforcement to provide basic information on what this high-tech equipment does and what information is being collected.

“You would think law enforcement would be eager to tell the public what’s going on,” McMillin says. “When they are secretive, it damages their credibility with the public.”

There’s nothing wrong with police agencies sharing information to help nab criminals. But when the process also involves the accumulation and storage of data on private citizens not wanted by the law, that’s going too far.

The proposed legislation could provide better oversight of the various high-tech systems and establish strict penalties for those who violate the public trust.

I've heard that McMillin was getting petitions, but did not want to run against Joe Hune who would have been a strong candidate who would have carried Livingston County. With Hune not running, that's opens things up for McMillin.
 
My insider contacts whom are Hune supporters now undecided think that McMillin will have no problems getting on the ballot. I was hoping Hune would run as well, but I can vote for McMillin or Bishop although leaning towards McMillin. I like both their records on the Second Amendment which is my biggest issue. I don't know much about Barnett one way or the other.
 
A culturally conservative, anti-police state, non interventionist who is likely strong on economics as well. Sounds like the perfect candidate.
