Justin Amash: Claims made in Ellis's 'bizarre smear campaign' unfounded (guest column)

By Rep. Justin Amash
November 26, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Like many in our community, I’ve been left scratching my head at the bizarre smear campaign that was launched against me a few weeks ago—nearly a year before the Republican primary.

One day, my opponent says I’m too conservative because I stood firmly against Obamacare and voted against an earmark. The next day, he runs attack ads claiming I’m too liberal, even though I’m the top conservative in the House according to conservative scorekeepers FreedomWorks and The Club for Growth.

Bizarre, I thought—until I read up on who’s behind his campaign.

The Washington Post reported that my challenger’s backers think he will do things “the old-fashioned way—by working the inside game and playing nice.”

“Wall Street donors” clamored for his campaign, according to a liberal former congressman who supports my challenger and pledged to raise $8 million this cycle.

“I don’t think Justin Amash cares if Bank of America gives to him or not,” one dismayed bank lobbyist told Politico.

They’re right. Crony capitalists have found their guy—and it’s not me.

here is the meat of Ellis' column, more of the same old crap:

Why am I challenging Justin Amash? Justin Amash voted against a 20 percent tax cut for small businesses, against the Balanced Budget Amendment, against reducing lawsuit abuse, and against the Paul Ryan Budget that would cut the deficit by nearly 90 percent in three years, lower tax rates, and repeal Obamacare.

He is the only Republican who refused to vote in favor of the Keystone Pipeline. Justin Amash also refused to vote to prevent our tax dollars from funding America’s largest abortion provider or even White House Czars.

In regard to our ally Israel, Justin Amash voted against a resolution stating, "any Palestinian unity government must forswear terrorism, accept Israel's right to exist, and reaffirm previous agreements made with Israel" [Library of Congress summary] and this resolution Amash opposed threatened to stop U.S. foreign aid money to the Palestinian Authority if they continued negotiating with the terrorist group Hamas instead of Israel. He was joined on that vote by only Reps. Dennis Kucinich, Ron Paul, Walter Jones and two other Democrats.

Congressional Quarterly determined that Justin Amash voted with President Obama 51 percent of the time in 2012; the next highest Michigan Republican was 18 percent.

How many times did SWC Obama vote in 2012?

This is pure disinformation at its ugliest. Obama only can sign bills that have gotten past the House and the Senate. He has only vetoed twice, in his whole tenure, none in 2012, so every bill passed over to the President's desk has been signed. Of all the bipartisan bills that made it through both houses in 2012, Amash has voted YES 51% of the time. That's all the douche's statistic actually means. We all know Ellis would've voted YES more often, and Ron Paul would've voted YES less often. So if Ellis is trying to frame 51% as too high, what he really means is we need less Brian Ellis's and more Ron Pauls. I agree!

Remember: There's lies, damned lies, and statistics. Figures that scumbag Ellis would resort to the worst of them all.

It's interesting that they keep trying to spin Amash's votes, but his practice of explaining his votes as they take place has rendered a lot of their attacks and spin-jobs futile. I still think explaining every vote is the smartest thing I've ever seen any politician do.

I must agree completely. Transparency at it's finest, and an innovative policy / strategy that has been nothing but pure genius from the very beginning of his (hopefully very long) political career.

Have any Democrats filed to run in Amash's district? If not, what is the filing deadline in Michigan?

There is one guy, but apparently no one has any idea who he is. I think the filing deadline is April 22nd.

If you go on Ellis' facebook page you'll see all these random news pieces being posted. I think they're doing that to hide all the negative comments.
