I chose other. Can someone help me put a label on myself? I don't require proof that there is a God because I believe there is but "it" (not he or she) isn't some person in human form sitting on a cloud, or in space on some weird planet, etc. I think that praying is useless but I admit to doing it at times. I don't believe anything (pretty much) in the Bible (virgin births, resurrection, walking on water, etc) but I don't object to everything in it. I don't believe in a Heaven or Hell (But then again I hope I'm wrong about that, who isn't afraid of the unknown?) and I have many problems with organized religion. I know I am not an atheist because I believe in a God and nobody will ever convince me there isn't a "higher power" (I really hate that term but that's the best way I can describe it) and I am not an agnostic because I don't require scientific proof. I just treat others the way I'd like to be treated and don't ridicule people for their beliefs (like some atheists I know do) whether they are Muslim, Jewish, or Christian. So what am I?

I'm so glad to see Athiesim (which isn't a religion ) is at the top. The world is waking up to the foolishness of religion. When I was a baby, I was a victim of genital mutilation under the guise of a Christian religious cult. So were millions of other men. There is no difference between what was done to me and the genital mutilation done to women in the east and Africa. If you dare say it is done for "health reasons" you are a fool. If it was inherently unhealthy, then why haven't we evolved to not need it as a species? Oh yeah, because you don't believe in evolution.

Sorry, I'm not going to be "nice" because religion isn't nice and it's track record throughout history proves it in spades. Religion causes good moral people to do horrible things in the name of a mystical invisible force.

I take offense as to your presumption that someone who predicates their life on logic and reason would suddenly begin to believe in the existence in an unknown and unseen mystical entity based on the presumption of another human being is preposterous.

I am uninterested in "decaffeinated religion"....

Hmm, I always considered deists from the 18th century as modern day atheists. Between evolution and our understanding of the universe now, I think a lot has been learned over the past two centuries.

And as having read Paine, I can say that with little hesitation. While he was an avid deist based on his perceptions of harmony and order in the natural world, I think modern science would give him at least a little pause today.

I'm agnostic, but I lean more towards deist than Atheist, so I put "other."

The more specific the professed nature of God, the less likely I am to subscribe to it. At the same time, I've had too many strange experiences, feelings of connectedness, and knowing things that I shouldn't, to actually subscribe to the opposite idea that the universe is an accident, that this life is all there is, etc. I leave the atheistic possibility open, but my gut leans pretty solidly in the other direction. It could be wishful thinking of course, but there's nothing wrong with having imagination and choosing to be an optimist.

I actually think it's the opposite. Paine and the Deists of his day would more likely be atheists now.

I'm atheist, but I want to get a few things clear. I love Christmas, and wish everyone a Merry Christmas when the holiday is near. And I don't want to get Religion out of schools, I want government out of schools. If we had a true free market in education, people could send their children to whatever school they wish. The underperforming schools would go out of business and the successful ones who actually teach to the individual child would succeed. In the end, everyone benefits and wins. Kids would be better taught. Unruly kids would have fewer choices for schools as schools would retain the right to refuse service (just like in the market place). Schools would be safer. The profit/loss mechanism would be in full swing so that there would be less waste. And most importantly, theft need not occur as in taxation to pay for the defunct system we have now.

Oh yeah, there also wouldn't be a witch-hunt against homeschoolers either.

I picked Atheist in the poll because I might as well be, but I always say I'm agnostic simply for the fact that I really just don't claim to know exactly how life came about. I can make my best guess from the evidence which is presented to me.

Well more specifically I am an Agnostic atheist - "Agnostic atheists are atheistic because they do not hold a belief in the existence of any deity and agnostic because they claim that the existence of a deity is either unknowable in principle or currently unknown in fact."

As an atheist I wanted to make sure people know that we are not anti-religion. I just don't subscribe. I am all for freedom, this includes religious freedom.

Who or what gives you the right to speak for all of us Atheists? Have we elected you the spokesman for our choices in life?

I want EVERYONE to know that Erazmus does NOT speak for all Atheists as I for one am a totally against all religions and do what I can at every turn to fight the evil's of these cults.
