True, and I would turn it around. Liberty is the essence of my religion. I believe that the free market exhibits the same divine order that we see in Nature and the galaxies. That's why it's not just another ideology. Ideology springs from the arrogance of man.

Care to explain how that is possible? How does the spirit exist if there is no source for it? If you have a view on where the world came from, you are religious. There is no reason for the spirit to exist if this is just a material world.

It's actually possible to be both atheist and religious. All atheism really means is the rejection of theism, which in this society typically means having no supernatural faith at all, but it is possible to reject theism and believe in non-theistic, or atheist, religions. Buddhism is an example.

Was not meant in a derogatory sense... I was surprised that there were so many atheists, but I did not pass judgment on that fact.

In fact, in a follow-up post, I talked about how great liberty is because it allows all of us to pursue the values of our own choosing.

Should I instead be more politically correct and praise the number of non-Christians? I'm not upset about the number of atheists here. I think it shows that the freedom message unites people of all backgrounds.

Nor was my comment meant to be derogatory. I think we meant the same thing, it's just we are coming from different sides of the coin. I just take more of a Penn Jillette-Bill Maher-George Carlin view on religion and God.
I agree with you, liberty is great for the reason you mentioned.

That's not necessarily freedom-oriented. If something doesn't follow one single arbitrator of rules, then that just means there are no rules except the ones you think of. That's actually pretty anti-freedom because it allows the proliferation of the state and its arbitrary standards for what is morally right and wrong. If you don't believe there are absolutes in the universe, then the state is the only possible source for any morals because they are the only ones with the means to enforce their morals. Not following a deity is simply the denial of morals, not the denial of collectivism or statism, or whatever. It is the acceptance of the idea that the state can determine things arbitrarily through power. God doesn't use His power to suppress His people. He uses it to free them and allow them to choose the right path.

Many people, I think just really get the wrong idea of what it means to believe in a universal standard for morality that comes from the one God. God is not a king.
