Edward Snowden — the former intelligence contractor who is now a fugitive after leaking details of U.S. surveillance programs — is “marooned in Russia” without a valid U.S. passport, the leader of the WikiLeaks organization said Sunday morning on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.”

That description by Julian Assange, whose anti-secrecy group has aided Snowden, may indicate that the former contractor is having trouble getting out of Moscow, where he is believed to be holed up in a transit area of Sheremetyevo International Airport.

WikiLeaks had originally said that Moscow would just be a stopover and that Snowden was headed to Ecuador.

But now, it does not seem that simple. On Saturday, Ecuador’s president said that his country could not consider Snowden’s request for asylum until he physically crossed its borders or made it to an Ecuadoran embassy.

The first option would probably require a commercial flight — and a certain media circus.

How ridiculous this is. A passport is simply a goddamn piece of paper. The purpose is to identify someone coming into a country. EVERYONE knows who Snowden is. This passport excuse is a bullshit technicality. The US gov't canceled his passport because they consider him guilty before proving himself innocent. Completely anti-freedom. He should be able to travel at this point with or without a passport.

Passports are an invention of the state and totally unnecessary in a free world.

You're right there is something going on that we aren't being told. There must be places set aside in airports for cases like this so some high profile person isn't just wondering around. I wonder if he gets to shower and change clothes? How long do you think his beard is by now? They couldn't make a movie this fascinating.

You're right there is something going on that we aren't being told. There must be places set aside in airports for cases like this so some high profile person isn't just wondering around. I wonder if he gets to shower and change clothes? How long do you think his beard is by now? They couldn't make a movie this fascinating.

There will be some full facility in an underground bunker or he's in a safe house being questioned and sleep deprived by Agents of the State and Putin's men. Who knows what he's going to tell them or if he's going to decrypt any files for them. Probably not. I'm sure he's well though. We'll see.
