That would be great. Menendez just got re-elected so a Republican could have this seat until 2018. I don't believe NJ has special elections.

Governor would choose Menedez's succesor

If Menendez goes, Gov. Christie will get to pick his successor - who will then most likely run as an incumbent in November of this year, or next year - depending on when Menendez resigns.

Strictly hypothetically in the interest of how the process works, if Menendez were to resign prior to August 27th, New Jersey would hold a general election for the Senate seat this coming November.

If the senator waits until after that date to vacate the seat, the state would face a 2014 general election for the Senate seat.....

In both cases, Christie would choose Menendez’s successor, who would run for the seat as the incumbent.

...Republican sources offer the following politicians on Christie’s U.S. Senate short list:

Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno,
state Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean (R-21),
state Sen. Joe Kyrillos (R-13),
state Sen. Kevin O’Toole (R-40), and
Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick (R-21).

Kean has an edge, according to one source, in part because he’s the son of a former governor and was the first to run against Senator Menendez in 2006

Tom Kean, Jr is not a liberty type - just your typical politician who's Dad used to be governor of NJ, was head of the 9/11 Commission, and is currently president of a University (Drew U). We'll probably be stuck with him.

If they kick Menendez out the senate (surely soon as he's an embarrassment ) then whoever gets appointed has to run in 2014 for the remainder of the term I believe.

We need to await what the Senate Ethics Committee does/says and the FBI investigation. Sooner or later the pressure will be on Menendez to fess up and resign. I await a teary news conference with anticipation but it won't be a few months because he's a sleazeball who thinks he can carry on and is protected by the media. However if he's going to be Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee that might speed up his exit as he needs to be vetted for the position and the government won't tolerate someone with these questions surrounding him. It will be interesting to see what excuse Reid uses to delay him taking up the gavel .

If it comes to the point where he will have to resign he might want the election next year. Christie will be at the top of the ticket this year and that could boost any Republican.
