Disgruntled former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson says he is considering leaving the Republican slate and running as a third-party candidate in the 2012 presidential election.

"I feel abandoned by the Republican Party," Johnson, who has been left out of most of the Republican debates, told the Sante Fe New Mexican newspaper this week, saying he might seek the Libertarian Party's support.

Sounds alot like what paul has had to endure. Not sure how much this takes away from Paul.

couple thread on this already. Lew has said that GJ is indeed gunning for the LP nom.

Personally, I hope he gets the LP nomination if Ron doesn't get the GOP nomination.

Lew Rockwell?

Agree about RJ Harris, I like that guy.

Eww. I would hope that that the LP has moved beyond nominating ideologues over nominating actual candidates.

Principles don't offend me, they attract me. Isn't that why the Libertarian party was started to begin with? "The party of principles"? Do you plan to change that to "The party of the cost benefit analysis"?

Party of Principles is a contradiction in terms. A political party is, by definition, an agent of compromise (in this case between individuals and groups for the purposes of electing candidates to office). Ideological lockstep is a therefore a non-starter for any organization seeking to achieve the mass to have a hope of effect.

Why do you support Ron Paul?

that doesn't attract me. If that is the direction the Libertarian party goes, I won't be interested.

If GJ does run third party, and Ron wins the GOP nomination.. Would this hurt Ron?

even if Ron doesn't get the nod does this effect Ron at all? I know alot of people might choose third party over choosing between either a Democrat or a Republican. Reminds me of the Ross Perot effect.

During the 1992 presidential campaign a business man from Texas gathered political momentum and made a viable attempt at gaining the presidency as a third party candidate. As it turned out, Ross Perot received 19% of the popular vote and is blamed, or thanked, for allowing Bill Clinton to become leader of the free world. Fast forward to 2008 and there is another Texan, with the same two initials, who has the chance to make a similar run, and possibly create a similar outcome as Perot.

Ron Paul has been gaining national attention in the past few months, mostly due to the impressive amounts of money he has recently raised. It looks as if he will not have the showing in the primaries needed to receive the Republican nomination, but he would still be in the running to attempt the presidency as a third party candidate. Paul would have a good chance at drawing similar quantities of votes from similar demographics as Ross Perot. Perot reached across political party lines and gained support from groups of people who rarely shared political views. Ron Paul seems to have a similar draw to voters as Perot.

As in 1992, a third party candidate could attract just enough votes to grant the presidency to a Clinton. Ron Paul may not win the nomination as a Republican, but he still might be a large contributor to the outcome of the 2008 election.

Come to think of it what if Ron Paul and Gary Johnson ran as a Independent thrid party ticket. This way we can watch the GOP crumble with the lousy candidates they have.

Ron is one of those candidates, and he intends to win.

This is what is wrong in America. Compromise on what you believe or be ignored.
I'd rather see a country that actually chose and chose poorly, than a country where your choice doesn't matter.
