John McCain on RP at the MTV forum

Well you didn't see all those kids jump up and starting cheering huh. I think their BS meters kicked in.

I believe Mccain is sincere in what he says, but he does deliberately or indeliberately distort Ron's views, and I think Ron should smack him around for that.

"They aren't fighting over there for oil and they aren't fighting for empire..."

Paul has only leveled that charge against our government and its policies, Mr. McCain. Why can't you see that?

"...and they aren't fighting illegally."

I can't believe he'd even touch that issue. He doesn't have to (most of that audience probably doesn't care about legality when it comes to universal health care, for example), and he's patently wrong. I submit to you, Mr. McCain, the United States Constitution as a reading assignment. If you somehow graduate without doing your studies, just don't claim to be an expert.

"They're fighting because they want America to be safe, or they wouldn't be out there putting their lives on the line."

They have to fight because that's their job. And do you honestly think, Mr. McCain, that the troops would get into a political debate while on duty, let alone when being visited by a prominent United States senator?
"I don't care what the statistics are."

Wow. So the statistics don't determine fact, John McCain does. You, sir, are a tool of the highest order.

And to think this guy used to be the only warmonger for whom I had a shred of respect.

Ding ding ding! You win the thread.
There are a bunch of active duty reserves that work at my work, one guy has been to Iraq lots of times since 1991. Candidly, he says the politicians are full of shit, he believes 9/11 is BS and we are there for oil, pure and simple. He said they fight us because we kill their mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters, they dont take too kindly to that. He said hes had many discussions with troops over there and of course they wont say any crap or theyd be intimidated and ostracized. Hes seen it happen. Candidly however, the troops know the war is BS.

Hes had several buddies marry iraqi girls.

I second what Goldwater Conservative said. Whatever McCain is hearing is officer mumbo-jumbo, because if he asked any lower enlisted service member, who by the way are the ones who get things done, they would spit in his face if they could. McCain doesn't give a rats ass about the troops. When the cameras aren't rolling he ignores them and doesn't give a shit about them, then when the spotlight is on its a whole different story. The military wants out of Iraq, but the Bush regime is forcing them to be there. Kind of like a modern day gulag.

The looks in the audience tell it all

Notice the stark difference in attitudes and enthusiasm between crowds that McCain and the establishment candidates speak to and those that RP speaks to. Quite an amazing difference and yes, they smell BS when McCain is demogoguing this issue.

But guys, don't you know that if you state something empathically enough it becomes true? "It's a FACT!"

Seriously, though, I found it very interesting that twice during that answer he stated, "and they believe that" when talking about the troops. What's there to believe or not to believe if what he is saying is indeed a FACT!

That was a scary performance. It was just this old guy walking in circles rambling , "The war is good. The war is good." I was disturbed by him there. He seemed psychotic and delusional. My heart actually breaks for him. Look at how far he has fallen.

Another Corporal in the Marine Corps here. I second the earlier comment. I never had the feeling I was fighting for my country or to protect my family or for my freedom or that of the Iraqi Freedom. I was over there for the NEOCON agenda and I knew it and so did my platoon. We had two people re-enlist out of a 150 in our company. (infantry)

I should say I do like McCain, but his glory days are behind him. It's really sad what he has turned into.

Many people in my units felt like they were fighting for our country back in 2003, but nobody really believes that anymore. I finally had enough and got out at 13 years in the Army.

Reminds me of Colbert's truthiness. He(McCain) know's he's right cause he feels, while the facts point (both Iraq facts, and fundraising numbers) that the armed services support RP.

John McCain is right. The soldiers do want to "finish the job." The question is: So what? Soldiers always want to "win the war" and the "finish the job." But doing what the soldiers want isn't how you set policy, and it doesn't mean you have the right policy.

I've been in the Navy for 15 years. I actually get out tomorrow, but that's mostly a different story. But part of the story for me is being tired of Arabian Gulf deployments on a back to back basis. Yes, even the cushy Navy people have felt the crunch of being over deployed. Having said that, McCain is dead wrong. Many people in the Armed Services are tired of being deployed and tired of this war. I know quite a few Army people as well who are on their 3rd or 4th tour of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan and they are tired of it as well. For him to stand there and try to claim that he and he alone knows for a fact that the military wants to be there is just wrong. McCain is out of touch with reality and blinded by his own zeal for war.

I used to be a huge fan of McCain until he became Bush's lap dog. Now I just see a disillusioned crazy man who thinks it's incumbent on the rest of us to make him president.

Hhhmmmm.......McCain has his biggest donations from employees of a bunch of banks, and Paul has his biggest donations from employees of 2 computer companies, a home builder and 2 branches of the armed forces....Is that proof enough McCain?

Soldiers are weapons that the country uses and a lost life is just a statistic to a politician, no more no less. Frankly, it really doesn't matter what the troops want, it's what they're ordered to do. But of course politicians such as McCain has to use them as propaganda tools.

McCain has been talking a lot about RP in the last several days. Paul is above him and he knows it. He's just trying to get some attention. RP is polling higher than he is, and has way more money.

I'm sure the other guys that are losing momentum will start engaging Paul as well.
