John Derbyshire "pretty much" decides for Ron Paul

If you read through the Corner blog there is a handful of recent posts by Jonah Goldberg and other bloggers about Ron Paul. Not exactly positive, but not hostile either. Mostly of the "yeah but he can't win" variety.

If you have something constructive to say to him, by all means write, he has posted such emails, but he also makes note of every non-constructive email he receives so avoid sending those.

This is great news, and I also have hope for Jonah Goldberg over at NRO.

William F. Buckley and George Will are two more great conservative thinkers I hope will come around to open endorsement once it becomes clear that Ron Paul is THE frontrunner, or close to it. They have both been very kind to his ideas.

Well, the old Conservative guard is slowly coming around.

Perhaps a team of very polite and articulate Ron Paul supporters should show our best face to them in a letter-writing campaign in order to offset the bad press?

And by writing, I mean handwritten if possible, email if necessary. This is key to showing a heartfelt conviction and conveying it to them. Email is in fact a bit *too* easy.

National Review writer basically endorses Paul!

I'm not sure if this is in the right forum, but John Derbyshire at National Review Online is defending Paul and has basically endorsed him:

There's an exchange going on between Jonah Goldberg, who has been dismissing Paul, and Derbyshire. Here's Derbyshire:

So far as Ron Paul's views are concerned, they are spelled out here, and I can't find anything to take exception with.

But in any case, I would never expect to agree with Paul, or any other candidate, on everything. I have concluded that we need systemic change, not just another, er, tax collector for the welfare state (which now seems to want to extend its loving embrace to all the people of the world). Only one candidate offers systemic change. The rest will be better or worse tax collectors.

[email protected] is the only email address I can find for the blog/Derbyshire, but I think we should all send Derbyshire a note of thanks letting him know we appreciate someone at NR standing up for Paul.

Yeah...I just canceled my subscription to NR mag last month because I was sick of them not acknowledging Paul's strong Reaganism. Good to see Derbyshire is finally speaking out. Read the whole exchange he has had with Jonah Goldberg over the last weeks.

Derbyshire is Excellent

He's probably the smartest and best writer at NR (and not just on political matters--read his expositions of mathematics, which have been made into popular books). He has said nice things about RP before and has always had strong Paleocon tendencies--I am not surprised to see him endorse RP.

It's important to reach out to constitucencies like NR and NRO-- we are not going to convert some of the hardcore neocons residing there, but there are others who we could bring over to our side, or at least not have actively opposing us. Bill Buckley has essentially been calling the Iraq war a failure for the past three years. Even folks like Jonah Goldberg have written reasonably respectful articles about Dr. Paul as of late. We need to continue to have success and show why RP is the true constitutional conservative candidate in this race.

Over time, if we build our momentum and don't alienate people though overheated rhetoric, more folks will jump on the bandwagon. Believe me, there is a significant slice over at NR (including Jonah Goldberg, and, I would imagine, Buckley himself) who fear Huckabee far more than Ron Paul-- if we establish ourselves in their minds as the Huckabee alternative we may pick up some surprising endorsements from that corner.

A wise and forward looking policy. I'm working hard to get mainstream Repubs returned to a freedom movement that Paul is just part of. The message is appealing, we just have to keep pushing it positively and in an inspiring manner.

Running as part of the md Ron Paul slate, I'm learning a lot about this real quick.

That's awesome! Do you think a lot of new people will read it and be converted? I am not familiar with NR.

I would say in my Republican circle NR has been the most prestigious conservative magazine. I think the quality has decreased in recent years. Maybe because Buckley has taken a back seat. I don't know how Jonah Goldberg ever became so prominent on NRO. I know his mother was a publisher. Anyways I agree that Derb is one of the best over there.
