Does this mean no more baloney sandwiches for prisoners?

Joe Arpaio has lost his seventh bid for Maricopa County sheriff, ending a 23-year reign that generated controversy, lawsuits and accusations of bias against Latinos while emboldening the strong-borders movement in the U.S.

Arpaio, a Republican, lost to Democrat Paul Penzone.

The longtime sheriff had trailed in some polls by double digits.

Arpaio's loss is a sign of the shifting demographics in Arizona, a traditionally conservative stronghold which has grown more liberal with an influx of Latino and young voters. Ballot measures addressing recreational marijuana and raising the minimum wage were also expected to draw outsize numbers of liberal voters.

You do realize that places that treat their prisoners better have dramatically lower recidivism rates, right?

This is great news.

I dont agree with that statement - but allow me to be clearer: I dont take issue with Sheriff Joe being gone as much as I do with the methods that were used to do it.

Bloomberg did the same thing in Chicago - they basically buy the elections. They displaced a pro-gun democrat with a hostile.

As for comfortable prisons - I dont have a problem with tent city prisons. I believe the absolute minimum should be provided - the objective is security IMO. I also believe its way too easy to land in prison these days. If someone has to be put in a cage, there'd better be a damn good reason for it. In my opinion, rehabilitation is something that can be done outside of prison. Cages should be reserved for animals.

I've had 4 family members in corrections - one who retired after 28 years. I've also been to Joliet (Collins street prison) and Statesville quite a few times - not as an inmate mind you. I've seen what these "pleasantvilles" look like on the inside. I believe the recidivism rate you speak of is more attributed to the culture/community where the prison is located than the amenities inside the prison.

All this said, I also believe that human beings should be treated with some respect. I suppose giving inmates the ability to work for certain luxuries would be a good thing, but someone would come along and tell me I'm for government run slavery.

Again though, I think Marcopa county should should be able to elect their sheriff without assistance from the likes of George Soros. There is an assault by these big-government thugs on many small county sheriffs (Sheriff Mack). I think Joe was a targeted because of his being a political threat rather than his treatment of prisoners.

Tent cities in moderate climates are not bad. But Arizona can get to 110 degrees. That can be life- threatening. If you want to reduce recidivism you need programs inside jails to teach them how to survive once they get out. If you make them warehouses then you will find people to fill up every room. I agree they do not need to be luxury- they should not be too comfortable. Nor should they be too harsh. Give a guy $100 bucks or whatever and tell them "good luck" won't help them avoid coming back. Give them nothing to do in jail besides kill time and they will talk to each other about how to become better criminals- not better citizens.

Our current system is designed to train criminals- not reform them.

I voted for the California bill to legalize marijuana because I hope it leads to fewer people warehoused in our jails (at taxpayer expense).

...libertarians recognize stinking arpaio and his drug pigs as criminal 'initiators of force' (in drug, etc., cases)...in an honest decent society where 'liberty' is valued, arpaio and the drug pigs are rotting in the 110 degree tents and eating baloney sandwiches...

...stinking republicrats!...trump and arpaio seem like a match made in hell...

Yeah, he went overboard on the drug war. He was also hardcore on DUI. When you oppress enough of the population, you start to lose support.
He's bad on everything.

Fucking guy has a tank with a 155mm cannon.

Good thing he won't be able to do much damage as drug czar or lead fascist or whatever.

WHO IS 'THEM' AND WHAT COLOR ARE THEY TO YOU

THESE ARE PEOPLE IN JAILS, WHICH IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THING THAN 'CRIMINALS'
