I don't disagree with Dave often, but I think he misses a point here.

I completely agree with the unforced error and having the refs cheat is stupid. But when he starts talking about the censorship being acceptable since this is similar to internal feuding and Kimmel being part of the cathedral, he misses a vital aspect.

He admits that it's arbitrary, but if we accept that as a standard for censorship, then all anyone has to do to silence an opinion they don't like is to craft some rationale that the speech they don't like is "part of the regime" they fashion themselves to be fighting against. It doesn't even have to be a good or logical argument as long as they can get some people to believe it. And they will. Since that gives them a self-justification to censor an opinion they didn't like anyway.

100% agree. I'm a big fan of Dave but his take was really disappointing. My reaction was identical to yours when he said Kimmel was part of the system so it was ok.

The late great Dr Walter Williams used to say that the true test of free speech wasn't allowing speech you agreed with, it was allowing speech you find despicable.

Dave had an equally bad take in the same podcast where he said that Kirk was killed while Kimmel lived. But Kirk was killed by a private individual, Kimmel was fired in part by the govt. Only govt censorship is what matters when it coms to free speech.

I don't see what's so hard about simultaneously recognizing that Kimmel is a scumbag, but that he had his free speech rights violated.
