When I was in bootcamp for the Navy this whole situation was going on. Our chief used this as a major tool in riling our support for what we were doing over seas up by giving us updates on her situation every day until he stated that our seal teams went in and rescued her. It was one of my main awakening times when I learned that the story was bullshit.
