I noticed a thread in this forum complaining about the lack of local candidates. Well, hopefully this will alleviate those complaints somewhat! This guy was introduced to me by a friend and he seems to be just what Flagstaff needs to recover in these tough times.

Jeff Oravits is running for City Council on a platform of fiscal conservatism, balanced budgets and improving Flagstaff's economic climate.

"While so many in our community have suffered financially over the past several years, this Council has continued to over-spend. In fact, just since last year our City budget has grown by nearly $35,000,000, a 19% increase! And, Flagstaff’s debt has grown by over $21,000,000 in less than two years. Our City faces a nearly 25% vacancy rate for office space and yet our Council continues to place burdensome fees and regulations upon businesses which raises costs for everyone. These fees and regulations discourage investment in our community and force businesses to close their doors. It is because of Flagstaff’s anti-business environment that some businesses have steered clear of our City."

About Jeff:

-founder of a concrete and masonry company
-founder of Lonely Records, recording company which sold CDs and DVDs all over the world
-currently works in real estate and says "we lease commercial space to over 50 businesses in Flagstaff and we provide over 30 families with affordable housing. This has given me an understanding of a broad spectrum of issues that affect Flagstaff’s residents and businesses, including the housing needs of Flagstaff and the challenges of small, medium and large businesses."
-grandmother grew up in Nazi Germany, taught Jeff that silence in the face of tyrannical government is always deadly.

Jeff lists three issues for Flagstaff that he wants to focus on.
Issue #1: Inefficiency & Over-spending.
Solution: Perform a Cost Benefit Analysis of every City Department &
every City program. Rebuild the Budget line by line and end wasteful
spending. Invest in our infrastructure, not in wasteful projects!

Issue #2: Too Much Debt. Since 2010 our City has increased its
debt by over $21,000,000.
Solution: If our current Council was capable of curtailing its spending,
we would not need to assume as much debt. Our goal should be less
debt. This will encourage more prudent spending and also lower
property taxes.

Issue #3: Burdensome Fees and Regulations.
Solution: Streamline the City bureaucracy and eliminate unnecessary
fees. This will encourage people to invest in our community.

So, anyone want to send him some donations? Tell your Flagstaff-area friends or family to vote for him? Or if you're in the area, want to put your signature on his petition to be on the ballot? Maybe come by sometime and knock on doors for him? Anything will help. :)
