Jeb Bush’s Deep Ties to Hispanics Show Even in Voter Form
06firstdraft-jeb-bush-tmagArticle.jpg

There is little doubt that Jeb Bush possesses strong credentials for appealing to Hispanic voters.
He speaks fluent Spanish. His wife, Columba Bush, was born in Mexico. For two years in his 20s, he lived in Venezuela, immersing himself in the country’s culture.

Mr. Bush, a former Florida governor and likely presidential candidate, was born in Texas and hails from one of America’s most prominent political dynasties. But on at least one occasion, it appears he got carried away with his appeal to Spanish-speaking voters and claimed he actually was Hispanic.

In a 2009 voter-registration application, obtained from the Miami-Dade County Elections Department, Mr. Bush marked Hispanic in the field labeled “race/ethnicity.”

A Bush spokeswoman could offer no explanation for the characterization.

Carolina Lopez, deputy supervisor of elections for Miami-Dade, said voters must submit hard copies of applications with a signature before receiving a voter information card confirming their address and polling location. According to the Florida Division of Elections, the application requires an original signature because the voter is swearing or affirming an oath.

Hispanic is often considered a cultural designation. A person of any race can be "Hispanic".

2 years in his 20's. I did not know that either.

Not surprising. He was probably learning the in/out of the drug smuggling trade his families been involved in for decades. He's vehemently adamant against any drug legalization. It would directly impact his personal wallet.

But the form asked for race/ethnicity. Did two years in Venezuela really sink deeper than a good winter tan?

If the Republicans can spend forty million getting down to the nitty gritty of whether Bill Clinton committed perjury or really didn't know what 'is' means, then it seems like we could do the Republican Party and the nation the favor of finding a wee bit of perjury here, and thus preventing a reprise of the 1992 presidential ballot.

But the form asked for race/ethnicity.

From my understanding Race is different than Ethnicity, not necessarily saying the overall point being made right now is wrong just wanted to mention this.

Ethnicity refers to shared cultural practices, perspectives, and distinctions that set apart one group of people from another. That is, ethnicity is a shared cultural heritage. The most common characteristics distinguishing various ethnic groups are ancestry, a sense of history, language, religion, and forms of dress. Ethnic differences are not inherited; they are learned.

The form is specifically asking about race/ethnicity. Maybe you can decide to decide to join an ethnicity, I don't know. But Jeb Bush declaring himself to be Hispanic seems about as legit to me as a Saudi Prince declaring himself to be ethnically Anglo.

I guess maybe technically it can be done, I'm not sure. But its kind of odd.

Hmmm...

Anyone have a pic of either George H.W. or Barb in a sombrero...?

Someone grab a camera and go ask them a question in Spanish--with a Colombian accent.

Learned behavior doesn't have to come from parents necessarily and people break from tradition all the time to adopt other ways of thinking and cultural behaviors especially in their 20s or for example adopting a spouses religion. If anything, if this isn't some kind of mistake or done on purpose for political reasons, it could be a glimmer into his thought process outside of the media spotlight.

This does. He learned how to change his identity, for political reasons or otherwise, and flush the true facts down the Memory Hole from his daddy. I guarantee it.

Wow he got a degree in Latin American studies, no wonder he marked down Hispanic he probably wanted to be Hispanic his entire life and took no time to marry a Mexican woman at 21, not that there is anything wrong with that persay, lol this is just funny. No wonder when he was doing that initial speech in Chicago and the topic was foreign policy he was really read up on Central/South America, but was lacking in basic understanding of Europe/Middle East/Asia issues, this is starting to make sense now.

When it was time to work, Bush worked. The focus he discovered after meeting Columba in Mexico carried over from Andover. When his friends decided to rush fraternities, Bush stayed behind — he wasn’t interested in dates or parties, Kerr said. It took him less than three years to graduate magna cum laude with a degree in Latin American studies.

“He had a very good ability to study really intently while other people were goofing off,” Kerr said. “He was probably more studious than the rest of us.”

After a few years of constant phone calls and occasional visits, Jeb, 21, married Columba, 20, at the UT-Austin University Catholic Center in 1974.

Kicking Off His Career

Bush returned to Houston after graduation and took a job at Texas Commerce Bank. After a short stint as a loans officer, he was tapped to help set up an office in Caracas to manage hundreds of millions of dollars flowing out of the Venezuelan oil fields.

We needed someone who spoke Spanish well, who had the ability to go into a situation with a lot of unknowns,” said Bill Arnold, vice president of the bank’s Latin America division at the time.

Still in his early-20s, Jeb picked up and moved to South America with Columba and their first two children, George P. and Noelle.
