I've had somewhat of a change of heart

I just looked up some information on running for Congress and unfortunately I will not be able to do so in 2010, I'll be waiting til 2012. I'm 22 years old so I have to wait. I guess I'll check into local office for now. Problem is, I don't know how a "Ron Paul Republican" would run at the local level since one of the main points of view for a RP Rep. is leaving a lot of decisions to the state and local levels and decreasing federal government size. I don't know what kind platform to run on for say, city council.

Ron Paul's message is about FREEDOM! On the local level, you could do worse as a platform than to vote against EVERY intrusion into people's lives (Protect Civil Liberties!), and EVERY effort to take money from people and spend it for them(Protect Free Markets!).

I've been quite negative on here since that letter and although I still have little hope for our presidential elections this year, I'm starting to understand why getting the message out was so important.
As long as we aren't under martial law after these elections I plan on running for Congress in 2010. My best friend is planning on starting in local politics, city council or mayor. And I'm sure many of you are now considering runs for political office. Maybe things won't get as bad as I anticipate and maybe by 2012 we'll have enough of Congress filled up with our guys and we'll be able to get a good guy in the Oval Office. I think we all have Ron Paul to thank for this because before he came along I'm sure a lot of us were either apathetic or brainwashed.
Although the light at the end of the tunnel is dim this year, in the coming years it'll be burning ever so brightly.

Even if things DO get as bad as some anticipate... isn't it BETTER to be in a position to DO something about it -- to at least speak out against it PUBLICLY -- rather than hiding in your basement waiting for them to come and take you away!

Because if and when things DO go bad, then there needs to be an ALTERNATIVE for people to rally around.

If all that is left are "statistas" then there will be no alternative anywhere within eyesight or earshot.

If you haven't already been there go to http://www.mises.org/ for a very clear idea of what the role of govenrment should be in peoples lives. Even at the local level govenrment has become too intrusive.

Martial law? What the hell, do you think this is Poland in the 80s? Supreme pessimism and willful denial of reality in that statement astounds me.

Martial Law would never be declared. There would be no need to. Here's the definition.

Martial Law - the body of law imposed by the military over civilian affairs (usually in time of war or civil crisis); overrides civil law

The idea behind Martial Law is that you can take away more of the people's freedom and rights temporarily while the country is at war.

The rights and freedoms they would normally take away during martial law are already gone. We no longer have rights in this country, it's just that most people don't know it yet because they haven't been in the way of something the government wanted.

If you think this is pessimism, it's not. I have looked up the specific laws and judicial decisions that have nullified our rights. In fact I stopped because there were a number of overlapping laws that nullified our rights.

Just because you haven't seen tanks and goose stepping troops going down main street doesn't mean that you live in a free country. That's what throws everybody off. They keep waiting for something really brick in the head, I coulda had a V8 obvious to happen where they will say Okay NOW we live in a fascist state.

Meanwhile our freedoms have trickled away 'til there are none left. We lost our rights a number of years ago. The only difference is that back then the government had to jump through a lot of hoops before they could take your rights away. Over time, and especially after 911, they removed all the hoops with the Patriot Act, The Real ID Act, The soon to be enacted Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Act,and still more that I don't have the name of right now.

But to call someone pessimistic for believing marshal law may happen is ignorant. The Patriot Act IS marshal law. That's why the first version had a "sunset clause" in it.

The government may be dumb, but it's smart enough to know that if they want Marshal law, it's better not to declare it, because you would then be declaring you have taken their rights away, and they would expect marshal law to end at some point.

People posting that they're going to pack all of their belongings in a wooden crate and leave the country if Dr. Paul doesn't take the Presidency is right in line with the "martial law" statement. Yeah, our liberties are being undermined, but they have been for many decades now. People who post crap like the aforementioned must not be very old, because before Dr. Paul bringing up these issues in the presidential race, there was Pat Buchanan, Ross Perot, Ronald Reagan, Barry Goldwater, and many others.

And I'd sure like to know where the hell people think they're going to go and not encounter government corruption and elitist dominions. Sweden? New Zealand? Yeah, good luck with that.
