Isn't the news free market?

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I guess my ultimate question is what is stopping a legit news station from popping up and reporting legit news? Is there some kind of government regulating on this that I don't know about?

Well the "news market" has traditionally been tied up because of high barriers to entry due to FCC regulations. The Internet is starting to change that. Why do you think the nightly news shows on NBC/ABC/CBS are having real problems with their ratings?

"Legit news"? Who the hell would want to hear about that?

Let's kill shit, watch careers be ruined, and bitch about gay people being gay!

This is a question my brother is addressing in a paper he is writing a school paper about. He's trying to argue that the media is free market but has considerable restraints imposed upon it where gov't ultimately does have control over it. But at the same time the media has to have content that appeals to the public (which seems considerably pro state) so they can sell advertisement for revenue.

My brother has actually told me he's having a hard time finding "unbiasd" sources on "bias" media (imagine that ;) )eg they either demonize liberal or conservative media. Any suggestions for him would be welcomed. :)

the NATIONAL LEVEL TV media as a "free market"?? Is Satellite access purely a market function???

The regular "airwaves" are government controlled through FCC(with limited space available for radio but not sure about TV???)...is the Satellite industry limited as well?? Can a private company have the ability to lease Satellite transponder space at will? Can they freely launch their own Satellite??

To be sure, if one was going to be a "NEW" media at the National level in Television they would have to have MASSIVE amounts of money to afford it. (so it is a "free market" presumably to those that have the money)

There is not a free market in news. The internet by itself comes close, but it has to compete with the rest.

The portion of the market that wants legt news is quite small.

A Free media market will therefore tend away from legit news.

The internet is the most freedom media has ever had. So the market demands Porn and Facebook.

Remember you are talking about the same market that supports WWE. I seriously doubt that there is a government conspiracy forcing homo-erotic impromptu theatre on us all. Then again...

My local sat netwook carries Al Jazzera as part of the basic news package. They seem pretty legit.

FCC, FTC, SEC, local & state & federal laws, taxes, the cops, Jooz (j/k lolz)...

Considering General Electric owns NBC, not really. And GE is a bank.

blogs are the closest thing you have to a free market media to keep everyone in check. You tube is the same way. We have found ways to get the good info. Unfortunately, we are struggling with delivering the good messages to the stupid general public, who either watches Fox News or CNN and thinks there are no other alternatives.

You can pretend you were even making a point, but I sincerely believe that anyone who actually reads and understands that thread will come to a wholly different conclusion. You are nothing more than a blowhard with a few bookmarks to copy and paste from... you haven't made an original point that I've ever seen, and nothing you actually say makes sense in context with what is being talked about... that others have finally noticed this is probably highly beneficial to the social health of this forum.

What you will now see from the Media.

Enjoy the read. ;)

In the context of reality, the points I make are highly origional. They practically don't get mentioned anywhere else. 95% of humanity would probably disagree with them.

"No other professors here would agree with your conclusions. But it's great you've gone ahead and done this INDIVIDUAL research."

- Said to me by my last tutor. I wrote a paper that was responding too. "Should Government stay out of Business."

I knew he was just like you Kade. Middle of the Road. So I attacked the premise.

"There is simply no other choice than this: either to abstain from interference in the free play of the market, or to delegate the entire management of production and distribution to the government. Either capitalism or socialism: there exists no middle way."

Liberalism, by Ludwig Von Mises p. 79

Like that Kade, Liberalism. :D
