Is it appropriate for a presidential candidate to use the title Doctor, when they have not taken any doctoral level courses? Does a "honorary" (aka "Not earned) degree give a person the associated title?

So far 75% think that an "unearned" degree should not be used to give the title DR. Now I wonder what presidential candidate would be using an unearned degree....hmmm?

Are you saying that Pastor Baldwin should not use the title Doctor? If that is your point I agree. In fact, I think only people with a doctorate in health sciences (MD, DO, DC, DPM, DVM, VMD) should use the title. All others are professors as I see it.

Your poll choices are seriously messed up. It's like a cavalcade of double-negatives.

it is never acceptable.

lmao. Now that I get this joke, it is funny as hell.

My vote, NO. I don't think anyone should claim that they "have a big ___" or "Imma Cop", because most likely they are the opposite of the very thing they claim to be (or have)
-I hope my answer was about as ridickulous as this lop sided poll.

Crap. I didn't read your poll slow enough and voted no when I should have voted yes.

It's only acceptable if you're Dr. Demento or Dr. Love.

I tend to agree and as much as I am making a joke in this thread, I will once again say that I think the supporters of "Dr." Baldwin really need to get a clue and realize that those of us in acadamia see it as an insult when someone who hasn't EARNED a degree, uses a title in order to get respect. Banging out another 120 - 140 credits beyond the masters and writing a Doctoral thesis,( or earning a MEdical Doctorat) isnt easy and EARNS the title. Having a friend who just so happens to own a church/college bestow upon you an honorary degree does NOT make a person a DR.

There are doctorates available in many fields, including a Doctor of Divinity. All titles, as long as all coursework & related practicum experiences are successfully completed, and the individual was conferred a doctoral degree, are appropriate to use when addressing the individual.

Dr. Pacelli

It is generally not in good professional form to address someone with an honorary degree as "doctor".

and this was my point. "Dr." Baldwin has NOT done the coursework for a Doctoral degree but was GIVEN an honorary title by another christian university. I personally think he should not use the title. He is Mr. Baldwin until he earns it.
