i want to leave you with a unique intra-office e-mail exchange, one you could only find at the office of senator rand paul:

Assistant to chief of staff: “rand wants an office face book. Please send me a headshot by tomorrow cob.”

legislative correspondent:” i feel that this would be an unwarranted investigation and acquisition of my private information by the government.”

chief of staff: “and he says you’re right. You can do a drawing instead if you want.”
lmao.

How effective are constituent letters and phone calls to the representatives? Does Rand get an update everyday or every week on the amount of communication for or against certain legislation?

I'm subscribed to this thread now so come back and remind of us your next update. I really enjoyed your unique insight.

tsai3904, they all get entered into the Voice system and the legislative correspondents use the data collected to give the Senator updates on issues. I'd say it's highly effective (and efficient!).

That's good to know. Hope you enjoy the internship!

Hello there fellow defenders of liberty,

I am an intern at Senator Paul's office this summer and the first installment of my summer internship blog is up on the Harvard Political Review:

Check it out to see what goes on in Senator Paul's laboratory of liberty!

Good stuff! Like you mentioned in your blog, some Senators never interact with their interns or even most of their staff (except for that single 2 second picture taking exercise). You are lucky to be with Rand.

Unfortunately it sounds like while it is efficient; such a system reduces the contacts into just a simple numbers game. ie: no different than legislating by polls. I guess I won't bother constructing an argument or waxing poetically when writing my legislators. I'll just write, "vote no on this". just enough to get a digit entered into the system.
