I'm An Atheist, Pro-Choice Republican

I am an athiest, pro-choice Republican. Many who read that will say "you're not really a republican -- they're for God and Life!"

Not completely so. They main core of the party is small government and conservative spending. That is what I believe in. A conservitive, small government won't have the time nor the resources to spend on either promoting or preventing abortion. As for God, the constitution clearly states, "congress shall pass no law," so God has no play in U.S. government.

Yes, I know many in my party hold these "values", but in terms of government, if they are true to our law, they have little place.

I believe that everyone has the right to marry one person at a time -- man OR woman. I believe family is what you make and those who support "family values" should remember that a loving home with two men is better than an abusive one with a man and a woman. I believe that the only way to "end" abortion is proper sexual education. I believe that rape is a worse crime than drug possession and the jail time should reflect it. I believe that we all need to stop labeling ourselves anything other than "people".

Seriously, welcome aboard. I'm a Deist, myself, although I'm SLIGHTLY pro-life (I'm federalist pro-life, like Ron Paul; but I believe that abortion should be legal in a case in which the mother's life is at risk).

You only need to be a Republican for this election. After Ron Paul wins Libertarianism will be the way to go.

I'm a Christian by the way but have no proof of anything and I believe strongly in the separation of church and state.

Many of my good friends are atheists. I have no problem with atheists who are good people.

I read something somewhere from a socialist who endorsed Ron Paul because they knew they could still set up socialist programs at the state level.

Strangly enough, one of my arguments to people who ask why I'm supporting a pro-life candidate is because I can work to keep abortion legal in my state but not push my will on everyone.

Not a bad idea here, couldn't we use that fact to appeal to other atheists and agnostics.

I think it's beautiful that so many atheists and Christian Conservatives support Paul. What other politician could possibly pull that off?

I agree with you that the end of abortion comes from proper education, but I cannot agree with abortion. I've been pregnant... my son's personality was apparent early on.

No way as long as I'm breathing will I ever approve of a one person having the right to kill another one. It's not about religion. It's about whether or not we have a right to life. I do, and so did my son when he was entirely dependant on my body. His right to live and to be nourished trumped my right to be comfortable.

I also have one adopted, other family members who've adopted and made the ultimate sacrifice to place their own children for adoption. I'm pretty sure my adopted son's mother would have gotten a lot of support to abort him. After all she was a poverty stricken Guatemalan widow, who made a mistake, and already could barely survive with her other children. I thank God every day that she chose to respect his right to live! It is not about religion.

I've been pregnant as well. I was highly encouraged by some (very dumb) doctors to abort as late as 25 weeks with my second son, which pissed me off because the hospital I was at had an EXCELLENT NICU and nothing was wrong with my son -- it was just me that was screwed. Christian was in there having a grand ol' time while I spent 5 months in a hospital bed. It was not an option to me personally unless I had multiple doctors tell me, before 25 weeks, that my either would not make it or would be so disabled that he wouldn't really "live". The only problem my son had was they took him at 35 weeks and he was a bit underweight.

I hate abortion with a passion, but I think it needs to be legal. I will do everything in my power if someone asked me personally to prevent it. Pregnancy is a difficult physical and mental ordeal and I'm not one to expect every woman to be able to deal with it. That's not even counting on outside influences such as rape, drug use, or many other circumstances. Also it's not mine or my government's place to say that a woman HAS to have the child.

That all being said, women have the personal resposibility to prevent pregnancy. We also have the being aware of our bodies enough to know when we may be preganant. Yes, I know our bodies love to play tricks on us (mine's currently doing summersaults thanks to Depo), but if you're having unprotected sex, a pregnancy test is $4 at Wal-Mart. It all falls back to education (I know you agreed to that already). You can start basic awareness in the toddler years. My oldest son doesn't know about the birds and the bees obviously. He does know mommy gets the baby vaccine and has a little yellow card where the doctor writes down when I got my shot. Right now, that means nothing to him other than "mommy gets shots too!" But, in 15 years or so, he'll know that a woman can get a shot to not have a baby. Obviously he'll know more by then, but he already knows one option.

I didn't mean to rant on. This is just a subject I feel strongly about. I respect Ron Paul so much because he never brought up "God" as a reason for it to be illegal -- he stated his personal expirence and it is how he interprets the constitution. Besides, we honestly need some damn fiscal sense before we really have a right to deal with the moral issues.

I think some of you atheists might be better off going to an atheist specific forum and creating a thread about Ron Paul, instead of the other way around.

but seriously, the pro-choice/pro-life labels suck big time. I refuse to play into the political shell game and use those labels.
