Illegal immigrant confronts Steve King; Rand Paul walks away

If you put Obama on the spot like that the only story the media would be able to tell is how the President of the United States was disrespected, blah blah blah. That is if you could get close enough to him to actually ask a question, the secret service would probably tackle you and cuff you and have you out the back door before you could get a syllable out.

Yep.

Obama has been confronted by Dreamers previously. No one was tackled, cut off, or shown the back door. During his first term Obama regularly told Dreamers who confronted him that it wasn't the appropriate time for immigration reform, but he's recently changed rhetoric.

I'm very disappointed in Rand on immigration. His opposition to the Senate bill was silly and he constantly changed his argument on why he wouldn't vote for it. "There isn't congressional oversight!" was particularly bad considering the bill did include several congressional checks. Only his argument that e-verify would create a de facto national ID held any water, but he's gone silent on that. I understand that his goal is to become "electable", and he's still better than most government officials, but whats the point of getting elected if he won't stand for anything of value in office?

Surprisingly this incident has made me slightly, ever so slightly, think better of Rep. King. I disagree with his positions on several points, and his comments on the immigration debate are some of the worst out there. At least he actually held his ground for his beliefs though.

Even if you don't favor increasing immigration or granting amnesty to the current illegal alien population, surely Rand could have held his ground and turned the discussion to one revolving around the need to end the War on Drugs.

Rand is starting to look extra stupid now.

Who is looking extra[sic] stupid?

from that link said:
Sorry Sen. Paul, but you're going to have to come up with a better excuse than this one...

Here's the excuse Paul gave...

I don't know... but it's pretty clear... If he is actually telling the truth about saying he'd... the likely scenario is... Whatever happened, Greta sure as hell wasn't going to push him on whether anyone should take his story at face value or not.

Someone comes up to talk to King, and since that keeps him from conversing with King any longer, and since he was raised well enough not to interrupt, he goes and does something else. Who but these bizarre progs could possibly even think of trying to claim this is in any way newsworthy?

69360 called it right. It wasn't manners, he immediately realized it was an ambush and bailed accordingly. He greeted them and shook their hands when they walked up. Then as soon as the word "dreamers" came out of her mouth, it looked like he was going to spit that bite of sandwich all over the table, lol. Then you can see the aide nod his head sideways in a "let's go" gesture, and he got up and left immediately without a word. Another classic Rand moment, IMO.

Steve King is a polite person who makes outlandish statements to upset liberals and Grover Norquist. Like Rand King mingles with the Hispanic, Black and progressive caucuses.

I bet you King will say Rand did nothing wrong. Steve King is a big neocon but I dont hear him talking about voting Hilary Clinton.

King will be in the Iowa Great Lakes Area on Monday night, August 4th, for a fundraiser for his campaign. And Rand Paul will be stumping for him.

King only has nice words for Rand and Ron in his preview of the meeting.

How would you all prefer for Rand to respond to this during a debate? He can't just walk away.

Welfare state is where the need for this conversation comes from. Ron rightly pointed this out. Drill down to the root of why it's happening because you can't heal an illness if you're 100% occupied by the symptoms.

I don't want latinos to fail. I don't want anyone to fail simply because of their race or their immigration history. A person is more than what their race or immigration status is. What I do want is people to make their own way and prove their worth to come to the 'greatest nation in history'. Welfare state and lax border control more often brings immigration of those that don't always want to make their own way. This is why laws require a legal immigrant to show a desire through their effort to obtain a visa and further effort to become citizens.

That's a good answer to stop this, but what of the people already here? More specifically, the ones who came here as kids who know nothing but America. This is a good deflection but it still is dodging this issue.

There are no good solutions.

No one will tolerate a police state round up and deportation. Even the boldest immigration hardliners will be unable to spin DHS kicking down doors once any video of it actually happening surfaces. I don't want to give them the power to kick in doors with no accountability any way, under guise of illegal immigration (see Rex 84). That's a road we don't want to go down for multiple reasons.

I have one thought that would help to flesh out a policy:
1) Deportations WILL occur for any illegal immigrant convicted of a crime and currently incarcerated. That used to be the policy, now it's the exception.

Yeah, these are the answers Rand needs to have prepared for these situations. It's not so bad here since it isn't directed at him and he just had to walk away. But I hope he has real answers for when he's put on the spot.

This video made my day.

Made Rand Paul seem more human to me, because I totally do the same thing when I sense an awkward and uncomfortable conversation incoming.

Peace... yoink!

Didn't think about that angle. You're right. They were addressing King, he was addressing them. Rand would be butting in to get involved. Then the talking points would be "Rand Paul rudely interrupts Steve King and his Dreamer constituents to try to make political points and kiss up to minorities again!"

Obama has been confronted by Dreamers previously. No one was tackled, cut off, or shown the back door.

They were in the process of being shown the back door. Secret Service was moving in. Obama was in the middle of a speech on camera, so there was no way he could walk away. No matter how Obama responds, the media will spin it in his favor. And no matter what Rand does, most of the media will spin it negatively. Where are those hecklers today? Deported? Under IRS audits?

And how could the leftists at The Colbert Report pass this one up? They dedicated a long segment last night to bashing Rand. Pure propaganda, as they really had no funny or clever ideas. It wasn't a good segment. Just carrying water for the left. His biggest laughs during the whole segment was making fun of a transvestite (Ru Paul, of course).

With all respects to Monty Python:

Rand Paul ran away (I did not!)
Bravely ran away (No I didn't!)
When the DREAMERS came to his table of eats
Brave Rand Paul bid a swift retreat
(I had another interview to do!)
He bravely ran away (Steve Deace was on the phone!)
Bravely ran away (I had to go to the bathroom!)
Bravely ran away (That hamburger was terrible. I could have gotten food poisoning!)

Rand Paul ran away (I did not!)
Bravely ran away (Liar!)
Aid to Israel it was said he'd cut off
But now it's no instead
(You completely mischaracterized my position!)
Brave Rand Paul ran away (No!)
Courageously ran away (Liar!)
Gallantly ran away (I did not!)

Even Chris Christie said he was still open to fundraise with Steve King after the media after the Cantaloupes thing. They attacked him on immigration during the 2013 Gubernatorial.

Colbert hates Steve King because Steve King called him an elitist during an immigration debate in 2010.
