My electricity has been off for almost 24 hours in 100+ degree heat due to a huge storm that blew through my area. Nearly a million people were effected, and some won't have electricity for another four or five days.

But thankfully it just came back on minutes ago. I was ROASTING. I'll never take electricity for granted again.

I made it through a pretty hot summer once w/o an air conditioner and only a powerful fan, but having nothing at all I think would make it very difficult to sleep.

I did similar, but without a blower on the furnace in the middle of winter. That sucks a lot too, but it is a good test to see what's important.

I think I'd take winter without a furnace than this summer without A/C. At least I had a fireplace, hot water and a gas stove.

Keep in mind that if you are used to living without power at all, you can prepare for hot days ahead. A sudden outage feels like you've been dropped into the deepest circle of hell.

My sympathies :(

When it gets so hot you could run around bare assed and it wouldn't do any good, I remember that, even in the dead of winter in NH, you can always put more clothes on.

It's going to be in the mid 70s during the day and mid 50s at night for the next two weeks where I live.

In America today there remains two factions.
The Federalist and the Anti-Federalist.
Neither of the two dominating political parties belong to the later. Their dogma is antithetical.
You can't be one and the other..

Today is not yesterday, it has yet to be tomorrow.

Junk think about those who won't have power for the next 4 or 5 days in my region =\

That's rough. I only have a crappy window unit, and on the 100 degree days the best it can do is cool my living room to about 80 degrees. I usually just walk around in a bathing suit and take a couple cold showers if I'm home on a day like today.

Love you man, but.....the pussification of America. I made it through my entire childhood, and a small portion of my adulthood, without air conditioning. As did many of us here over 40, I suspect.

It's not pussification. You can't miss something you've never had. However, when you grow up with something, you basically take it for granted, and then when it's gone it becomes basically an emergency situation.

This is my third summer in NYC. It's also my third summer without an air conditioner or a fan. Really doesn't bother me so much, although the first few weeks of it were tough.

For those asking "why" - I was poor when I first moved up here, paying for grad school and rent and didn't have a job or any job prospects...As for the last two years, I guess I'm just stubborn and don't want to spend money on something I know I don't really need. :p

My first window unit was a 220 purchase at Sears for around $400 at the age of 23 . Never had any before that.

I like it , but have never taken it for granted , in the spring , storm season , it is not uncommon for me to get home from work at night and have no power . I entertain myself by firing up the oil lamp in each room downstairs and then going outside , cracking a beer and throwing something on the grill , maybe talk to the dog .... common again in the winter , ice storms , when younger , I would read , now , I cannot read by the lamplight...

There have been plenty of times that we've been without power, but it usually only lasts for 3-5 hours in more milder temperatures. This is as hot as I can remember it ever being here, plus my kid has been sick for like a week, so everything just compounded into shit.

Yeah3 -5 hours is nothing , for me usually a couple days at a time , I have a gas water heater , gas stove and a hook up to a city water now which are all improvements for me , I can heat with the wood stove , still take a hot shower cook on the stove or grill . Before my only water source was a well with an electric pump , so I did not even have water. My sympathies on the sick child , that would , indeed make the heat worse ..

Taking a cold shower is always nice during hot days, or sitting in front of a fan with a wet shirt on.

I do enjoy my 3000 watt central air conditioner immensely, even though I did not grow up with one.

I turned our central air on Sun before last , last year , it was probably July before I used it . Next electric bill will be high , and I always hate that ....

W00t!

This is why I'm totally opposed to centralized power distribution systems. Independent energy sources must be the focus for the future.

You had no power at all and had to live through 100+ degree heat and had no trouble getting to sleep those nights?

Man oh man when there was no a/c around, at least we had fans, and since we knew we wouldn't have a/c we always had tons of ice and cold water around. Your childhood was different, I guess. Good on ya! No ice or fans or anything for you!

No one ever died of the heat, either, no sir!

Darned pussification :|
