No offense, but that seems to be one of the most pessimistic threads Ive read on here in awhile. I sure hope it wasn't intended that way.
No it wasn't. Let me explain. Like many here, I have many elections of experiences supporting and voting for underdogs. Mostly LP.
Ron Paul is a Republican, as are the "Ron Paul Republicans." However, in political terms these are outsider campaigns with the characteristics of 3rd party runs.
Every 2 or 4 years, people get very passionate about supporting certain underdog candidates. Then what happens is instead of staying to help build a movement, many people who have unrealistic expectations drop out of politics and/or join the "establishment" when their pet candidates do not miraculously win.
It is reality that most of these candidates will lose and many will not make it out of the primaries. So what happens then?
If you want to build a movemnent you do it in NON-Election years. You dont just come out every 2 or 4 years , get all passionate and then give up when you lose. You keep going and keep building.
One thing Ron Paul Republicans can learn from the 3rd parties and the GOP establishment is how to or how NOT to buildup a political party. For example, IMHo, parties like the LP and CP commit political suicide by running candidates for offices they are not qualified. You dont start at the US Senate or President. If you can't even win an election for your town council ( where people should know and LIKE you, since they are your neighbors) why would you run for COngress or Senate?
The Democratic and GOP establishments have the power they do by GROOMING candidates. If we want to take over the GOP we should do the same.
For example, someone might spend a couple years on City COuncil, then a couple terms in the State House ( keep in mind you actually have to win at each level) before they even consider running for Congress or Governor, not to mention US Senate or above.
I am talking about Millionaire proffessionals ( lawyers, doctors, businessmen) who humble themselves to be involved in their local political scene and work their way up.
The party establishments didnt build themselves up in 1 day by deciding to run a slate of guys for Congress. They run candidates on all levels and groom them for advancement. Running a slate for Congress or some other office is a GOOD START. Though realisticaly if you really want to win and have no experience and no impressive credentials even Congress is way too hig to aim- unless you are running a "paper" or educational campaign only. Why not run a Ron Paul Republican takeover of your town or city govenrment- you know locally where most issues that people reallly care about are decided. Or try to take over cities, counties, state house, state..you get the idea.
Here is a real example of the pessimism ( well, actually Reality).
One candidate on that list is running as a Ron Paul Republican in my home COngressional District. He has at least 4 competitors for the GOP nom, including the incumbent and 2 state senators who are very successful and well liked.
The Republican incumbent is a 9 term COngressmen. The GOP establishment is running wealthy and successful candidates against him and he is a target. For silly reasons like his brother being gay ( wtf?). Yes, he does have a socailly liberal voting recoprd. However the #1 reason he is a target? YEP, he voted for Troop Withdrawl in Iraq. That is the # 1 reason he is called a "RINO" and must be defeated. Sound familiar?
Running against him ( and ahead of the Ron Paul Republican) are:
1.A multimillionaire state senator who was a past GOP candidate for US Senate. He lost to a long serving popular Democrat Senator ( our state is 2-1 Democrat). He was a state senator at the time and has now been there for about 6 years.
2.A doctor who has served in the State Senate since 1999. He has been endorsed by the former Governor, most state senators in the district, The Club for Growth, and just about every local political writer, blogger, local conservatives, etc.
3. A Ron Paul Republican who has been called a "crazy nut" by what little coverage he has received.
4. Some other guy I'm not familiar with.
In this case the Ron Paul Republican will finish no higher than 4th in the GOP Primary. He may finish a little higher if someone else drops out and endorses the #1 challenger.
While I don't know if every race is quite this competitive, I am imagine MOST of the Ron Paul Republicans who are running for high level office as part of the "Ron Paul slate" face similar odds and are likely to lose primaries to many other candidates.
This is not pessimism. It's political reality and the ability to analyze the specific situations.
now, I think all these people running for Congress and other offices- It's a GREAT Thing. And I APPLAUD them. All I said in my post was that MOST ( I didnt say all) will lose- which is a political fact. When you run for office, most people lose. We had at least 11 Republicans running for POTUS. 11 out of 11 will lose. There is nothing wrong with saying that.
My commentary was, when everyone puts all their efforts and passion into a cause that ( politically speaking) will most likely lose in the short term- what really matters is how you face defeat and you move forward.
As we all know Barry Goldwater lost his race for president in 1964, and it was a big loss. Worst loss by a major POTUS candidate in history at the time, I believe. but many many people credit Goldwater and the time the GOP spent "in the wilderness" for the Reagan Revolution and re-emgergence of the Republican Party. For that to happen people had to stick around and keep working away at the establishment even in the face of terrble defeat.
Now, in my recent experience with longshot candidates- especially when Young People ( or people with ZERO voting experience or real life experience who latch onto a cause or candidate with delusions of sure victory) make up a lot of the base. They expect immediate gratification and if they dont WIN 100% of their pet issues, they cry and go home or join the popular kids in the estalishment.
What I am saying is I hope people dont have that attitude and choose to stick around and build the movement, especially locally and in non election years. I don't want to see a "Ron Paul Republican" movement go the way of the 3rd parties and other political losers.
