On the mach back toward Lexington at gunpoint, Revere was threatened that his head would be blown off if he did not tell everything he knew. Revere was glad to oblige because he knew it would put the fear of God into these Redcoats to know there entire mission was compromised. Before they reached Lexington, the redcoats heard a volley from the Minutemen gathering on Lexington Green. They released their prisoners on foot right there and rode to warn their commanding officers. Revere hiked back to Lexington in time to convince Hancock to flee rather than fight as he was too valuable an asset to lose. In his haste, Hancock left a chest of Congressional papers in Lexington. When this was discovered, Revere went back to retrieve them just as the Regulars marched into Lexington at dawn. Revere heard the first shots that morning but could not stay around to see the outcome of the Battle of Lexington Green.
