I need to convince my dad, who was a Fred Thompson supporter

Ron Paul has a perfect voting record on protecting 2nd Amendment rights bar none. A lot of Fred's supporters are big on protecting the 2nd amendment rights.

Tell him that if he loves you, he needs to give you 10 mins of his undivided attention.
Sit him down, tell him to not comment durring the video and that you discuse it after the file is done playing, then play this video for him: http://youtube.com/watch?v=herUw6FX4MI

DO NOT TALK AT ALL ONCE YOU HIT PLAY.

Once its done ask him, would you like to hear ron paul explain what is wrong with the economy? he has written 6 books on it.

Fred was Pro-Choice, Pro-Gun Laws, was and still is Pro-Amnesty (as long as it isn't "easy") in his 8 years in the senate - so why does everyone all the sudden think he's conservative ?

The argument I use with neo-cons is that terrorists are really just criminals and don't represent an ENTIRE society. If a guy robbed a bank in Nevada and fled to California, would you send in the nevada National Guard and invade California, and occupy it, and then bomb the shit out of it just to get that one guy? No, you'd probably send in a swat team. That's what we need, a swat team not a an army. Killing a fly with a baseball bat only breaks all your furniture.

dont need to be over there anymore

Well we dont need to be over there anymore.
Patreus was forced to do these paid CLC programs to create the peace.
It has been the only thing that has worked. We therefore can now leave in victory.
The payments can continue until our troops are completely out over the next year or two.

McCain is a double talker on illegal immigration, the whole story on iraq, etc.

Tell him every major war since the Civil War has initiated a draft. Ask him if the Iraq War is so important to him, is he willing to vote for somebody who will send his son there to die...or send other men's children there to die?

(Since the Gulf War lasted a little over 6 months, I am not counting that as a major war.)

I think I may actually have a fighting chance. He liked Fred Thompson because Fred was pro life, pro gun, fiscally conservative, and anti amnesty. (and Southern I suspect) None of the other candidates left besides Ron paul fit that bill. Unfortunately, my dad is also hopelessly pro-war. He had harsh words for Paul back in May, but seems to be less harsh now (I dont know if its because he's found some common ground or if its just to appease me). His brother in law just got finished serving in Iraq, and I have to choose my words carefully and always preface things with "I have the greatest respect imaginable for the men and women in uniform, but..." so that they don't try and confuse my anti war stance with an anti troops stance.

I'm afraid he'll go for McCain now, but I'm going to try again anyway. It seems so weird that conservatives used to hate McCain and call him a RINO, but now they're anointing him. My second guess would be Huckabee, although I know he's against Huckabee's pro illegal immigration, pro taxation stances. We share a disdain for Rudy, so I think I'm safe there.

Paul is so conservative he opposes the war. And technically, it's actually an occupation and reconstruction now, the very "nation-building" Bush ran against in 2000 and for which the Republicans mercilessly criticized Clinton in the 90s. It's basically just overseas socialism, since we're paying to build and rebuild everything over there (even as our own bridges collapse...). The only "good" thing is that we're letting our children deal with the inevitable tax burden while we borrow from Red China to finance all this.

Meanwhile, our borders are left wide open here at home and we are stretched so thin we couldn't adequately respond to a direct threat if we wanted. The hundreds of billions we're taking out in loans, and will have to pay back with interest, could lead to such a severe economic crunch that we might have to pull back our military from being a global police force anyway, and it won't be on our terms like it would be if Paul had his way.

Our current foreign policy is really making us weaker and less safe, while Paul's would improve national defense and strengthen our military. We'd be able to respond to any threat in the world. If we don't change our ways, we could go the way of the Soviet Union, which overexerted itself militarily to the point its economy collapsed. Paul would do wonders for America's economic health, growth, and stability, which would in turn beef us up.

**** PLEASE USE THIS ****

Tell him that being against the war is more of an economic choice then it is an assault on patriotism. We all support out troops and believe that they are the backbone of our freedom but that we have to make a choice economically on how to be free. On one hand, we can be safe through a strong offense and continue on the path that Pres. Bush started. On the other hand we can be just as safe by bringing out troops home and defending our borders, naval ports and airports. At present, less then 10% (actually closer to 7%) of all shipping containers coming into America are checked or inspected. Our airports could use additional resources and the majority of our border agents are in Iraq, leaving our country wide open for attack. If we bring home just the nearly 200,000 soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan we can secure our borders like we have never had before, search 100% of all containers and make our airports the safest in the world. The most important point is that we can do it at a fraction of the cost to fight this war. Either strong offense with additional debt, or strong defense with massive cost savings, we will be safe. With the first, the dollar continues to decline and our country is put in jeopardy by the most hideous of invaders, inflation and recession or we go with the second and apply the cost savings to reducing the tax burden on Americans and stimulate our economy back to the strong, proud nation whos currency is the envy of the entire world.

just pose this question to him.

"if china came here to liberate us because they didn't agree with our way of life, what would you do? would you fight or work with them to instill communism?"

that may work to convince him that them building bases here and bombing us is like what we're doing over there, we can't change how they live through force and they will continue fighting us. plus foreign policy and the economy go hand in hand. we already have a crashing economy, partly because of our extravagent interventionist hundreds of billions to a trillion dollar foreign policy with 700 bases in 130 countries we cannot manage. the economy will never get better without changing foreign policy, saving money and lives.
