This is why:

Kemp has been an outspoken opponent of the other version of football, known in the United States as soccer. In 1986 on the House floor during a debate concerning whether the United States should host the 1994 World Cup, Kemp famously proclaimed "I think it is important for all those young out there — who someday hope to play real football, where you throw it and kick it and run with it and put it in your hands — [that] a distinction should be made that football is democratic capitalism, whereas soccer is a European socialist sport."

Soccer is my favorite sport and im no damn commie!

I agree with Jack Kemp on this one, sorry. It's a pansy sport. Rugby is where it's at.

Football is extremely regimented, and everyone is geared up on every part of their body. Most of the activity is people running around.

Soccer is far more free-flowing and continuous, and everyone is as unequipped as you can get for a major athletic activity. Most of it is people running around while demonstrating considerable skill in controlling the ball with their feet (which they actually use, unlike in "foot"ball).

As far as I'm concerned, soccer is far more interesting and far more intense. The only thing that would make football hold a candle to it is if no gear was involved and people actually took those hits, or maybe if it was much less stop-and-go.

The equipment says it all:

American football is very boring. Too much stop and go. Same with basketball, every little thing gets flagged. Yawn!

Now, basketball I do like. The action is constant and the games are usually close for most of the playing time. I agree that too many things get flagged, but that's why street games are better.

American Football = Rugby for pussies who don't want to get owwies.
Primary Method of Scoring = Using your hands and carrying a ball across a goal line.
Secondary Method of Scoring = Kicking a ball through uprights.
The Primary method is worth twice to six times the secondary method.
Number of sanctionable offenses = Numerous that result in 5, 10, 15 yard penalties with or without the loss of "down" , with or without sanction to individual players
Number of rules = Numerous
Uniform requirement = Shoulder pads, armguards, knee guards, chest pads, helmet , mask grill , shirt, pants, socks, shoes, gloves in some cases, fanny pack containing QB to Bench radio gear.

REAL Football = Kicking a ball with the foot.
Primary Method of Scoring = Using the feet, in particular, a foot, to propel a ball into an open goal area.
Number of sanctionable offenses = 10 Penal fouls resulting in a direct kick, 3 offenses resulting in an indirect kick
Number of rules = 17
Uniform Requirement = Shirt. Shoes. Socks. Shin Guards. Shorts.

If "Soccer" is such a pussy sport.. why do all the people who play American football feel the need to don armor while the players of Soccer are forbidden from wearing ANY armor.

The reason why you don't wear pads in soccer and you do in football is because you could die if you don't wear any pads. Soccer the likely of death is .000001% w/out pads.

Guess what.. there is a football without pads. It's called Rugby.

In fact, there are TWO. Rugby, and Aussie Rules Football.

In fact, three. Gaelic rules .

Here's the Big Secret. Americans are PUSSIES. We're one of the only sporting nations in the world that over armor our players in contact sports. Further , studies have been done that show that the overarmoring might be responsible for more injuries than it prevents.

I know, I played it.

You guys are getting worked up over nothing, Kemp's remarks were meant to be tongue-in-cheek. He's still a neocon though.

Football is the Washington Bureaucrat sport with all of its rules rules rules and rules. Who really gives a damn if the Offensive line is moving around before the snap? So what? Why x number of people have to be on the line before a snap? I just gets tedious. Can't nudge the receiver on a pass route? Most of the rules make no sense. It's a fun game for kids to play or for guys to play at the park, but at the upper levels there is so much regulation. Not to mention people hiding behind masks. From a viewer standpoint, it stinks that you cannot see their facial expressions. Takes a lot of the fun out of watching it, the drama.

I love the Serie A, which I follow religiously. And soccer has a lot less dumb rules. The rules actually make sense. Maybe Kemp is offended by this.

The rules are what make the game interesting. If you had movement on the offensive line before the snap, or interference of a wide receiver then it's not American Football, simple as that.

Oh really? And why is that? You do realize these rules change all the time and there is nothing carved in stone. What constitutes pass interference, for example, has been altered time and again. And do you have a valid reason why the O line is not allowed to move? What is the purpose of it? < Answer: there is none; it's just a rule >

"Rules are what make the game interesting" -- Hillary couldn't have said it any better... What proper little conditioned bureaucrats we are :)

Soccer was quite popular here in America before it was labeled "commie ball" in the mid to latter part of this century.

My grandfather is 93 years old and he told me that he used to play soccer when he was in grade school.
