Hurricane Melissa

I intellectually know it's "calm" in the eye of a hurricane but I still think that takes real cojones.

Speaking from experience, it's the intense winds in the last couple of miles before entering the eye, that are the very worst.

At least in an aircraft, the descending cool air in the eye can result in relative calm, at least for a little while.

On a ship, the confused seas in the eye itself are insanely hard to compensate for.

A testament to the pilots and engineers that design and modify and fortify the "Hurricane Hunters" and their cojones, is the fact that the US has not lost one since 1955.

I fear there will be massive loss of life on Jamaica and that island may be uninhabitable for an extended period of time.

I didn't even know Jamaica was in trouble. My ex-wife was there a week or so ago for a mutual friend's wedding. Haiti seems to be in the crosshairs too. I wonder what the best shelter is in a hurricane? For a tornado (what we get where I live) you go to the basement, but in a hurricane you have to worry about flooding.

I may have over estimated the impact.

There are still buildings standing and so far there are only seven reported dead.

I can recall being on the ground in the immediate wake of both Rita and Andrew and there was nothing left.

The earth was scrubbed clean of everything.

In Florida after Andrew, I recall roads that had the pavement scoured off down to bare earth and marl.

Still very very heavy damage on Jamaica.
