Coud you expound on that? I wasn't around during his presidency.

Jimmy Carter stole into the presidency with energy and charisma and a lot of anti-Washington sentiment in the years after Nixon. The press said he wasn't electable but that was one of the years (1980 was the other) that the public didn't listen. He didn't blindly support every weapons system and was a general pain in The System's ass, so Congress (even--in fact especially--his own party) stonewalled the hell out of him, leaving him unable to win re-election because he was considered "ineffective". Oh, and if you think the warlords of the middle east like presidents who actually have respect for them and their sovereignty, as opposed to tough-talking blowhards like McCain who stir up their people against us, look up the Iranian Hostage Crisis.
