I've actually had to deal with this, one step removed. It's tough knowing your kid will probably have a tougher time of it in the world in general than other kids. (It shouldn't make any difference, but it does.) It may force/nudge him/her into a life/work path that they may not have chosen otherwise, maybe--some kids are tougher than others regardless of their circumstances.
(My child is left handed--his first public school teacher hated left-handed kids, she had to spend one on one time with him teaching him how to write left handed.....irrational, stupid, but had to be dealt with--second longest 9 months of my life.)
In this case, things have worked out. There isn't any major issue between parent and child (now grown and on his own.) He has an awesome career, and by all indications a fairly stable life in these turbulent times.
My choice would be to support fully, with sadness in the knowledge that things may be tougher for my child, which makes the support even more important.
